Can I study postgraduate in English ?

Hi,

This might be a really dumb question for those who work at the universities - but can I do a postgrad course in English (as in English as the language being written, spoken) at Uni in Zurich ? - or is German always the langauge of instruction ?

I've got a three year bachelors degree plus a few other bits and pieces - but if I want to do a masters or something - how do I do that - can I do it in English - would I need German ?

Am bored, planning my next career move post-children

Re: Can I study postgraduate in English ?

It will depend on the course of study. If you want to study something in the sciences, you are likely to be taking courses in English. Advanced level bachelor and master courses in chemistry, for example at the UZH are taught in English.
As far as I know, humanities generally require German (you may need the ZOP or equivalent diploma to show you can keep up)

For example, here's a list of some courses from UZH. Once you click on a course you are interested in, it tells you at the bottom what the language requirements for the specific course are.

Re: Can I study postgraduate in English ?

Hi, I'm in much the same position as you. There are a few Masters courses in English at ETH (http://www.ethz.ch/prospectives/programmes/index_EN) but none of them were what I wanted.

Through friends who teach at these places I know there are also courses at St Gallen University and the University of Zurich that are taught in English, but I'm not sure that they are 100% English and I haven't found anything I really want to do.

In the end, I've decided to do something online from an Australian university, as I'm Australian and therefore still classed as a domestic student there. Otherwise, there's the Open University in the UK (way too expensive for me as I'd be classed as an International student) or all the business schools here, but they're pretty expensive, too.

If you know exactly which areas of study you're interested in I think it could be worth just contacting the relevant departments and asking them, as there does seem to be a lot going on in English. Alternatively, you could perhaps audit some of the courses to see what you think and and at least that would get you in a studying frame of mind again.

Hope that helps!

Kate

Re: Can I study postgraduate in English ?

At the Uni in Bern, you can study for an MA in English, but there are 2 stumbling blocks:

You have to pass an entrance test in German.
You will have to do a second subject - Psychology, Sociology, German, French, etc.

It is important to have as much info about your BA course as possible, as the Uni needs to know this to fit you in to the current course (Einstufung)
The MA in Bern is still structured like the Swiss Lizentiat and is not yet like the UK MA, despite the Bologna Agreement. This will eventually change, though.

It takes two years to complete.

Re: Can I study postgraduate in English ?

Slightly off topic, but search for Online Master's programmes from Sweden - by ( current ) law, most PG level studies are tuition free ( even if done on campus ) and conform to the Bologna process.

I am already doing courses as opposed to programmes, online completely free and in English. With modularity, one can accumulate enough courses or ECTS and request for a degree.

Edit: To apply, visit and create an account at www.studera.nu ( VHS ), and submit certified copies of your degree(s), transcripts and other papers to VHS by postal mail. Allow ample time for processing. Good luck.
