| Hi, My son started learning German in October. He goes to a public school where he seems to be the only foreign kid in his class. The teachers do try to give him extra lessons, but as far as I know, there is no organized official integration program of any kind in that school. He didn't get any "official" textbook for learning German either. I'm looking for a good book that would help him learn some basic vocabulary and the probably the basics of grammar. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, nyenyec | |

Talk to the Kantonal Schulamt (Dept of Schools)
I put my 10yr and 8yr old girls into Swiss school in January this year, without a word of German, here in canton Zurich.
The canton, as part of their requirement to be able to integrate non-native speaking children, placed my children into special language learning classes (at nearby schools, because the local school didn't have this class).
Remember: this is also required for Swiss children, as a non-German speaking family from Ticino or French-speaking Switzerland that moves to your area is also in the same situation as you.
After 6 months of intensive German, my children now attend the local school and participate in lessons at the same level as other children of their age.
They can now speak, read and write German and play with friends all in German. They also now are starting to speak Swiss German.
The school system has special books published which the children use to learn German in a friendly, easy, playful way. they are fantastic and make learning German lots of fun. The books are published on a cantonal basis, so you'll likely receive the same books as we did. and it's all at no charge, part of the compulsory free education system.
So ring the Schulamt for your region and ask them about their integration program, it definitely exists. It may not be in your school, but the special classes should be in a school nearby.
