Marriage

After moving here my partner decided that we should get married in the states and not in Switzerland
Do we have to do any paperwork for the marriage to be recognized here
Does anyone one know if there is an advantage to one over the other
Im lost in this area so any advice would be helpful
thank you

Re: Marriage

I believe the Swiss authorities will recognise (and potentially keep) a marriage certificate from the US.

$25 in Vegas and you're sorted....

Re: Marriage

You'll save a lot in paperwork having the marriage in the USA, but then you'll lose out on airfares...

Re: Marriage

I was married and registered my marriage in the US with the Swiss authorities, who translated the certificate for free into German and sent it to my wife's canton of origin. If you plan to move here in the future, *ensure* that the canton of origin sent a copy to the canton of residency. Look around www.swissemb.org for more information on how to proceed. I went through New York, as they serve New England.

Here is the PDF I filled out: http://www.eda.admin.ch/etc/medialib...23_marcert.pdf

You will only have extra hoops if you get married in Las Vegas which due to its lax marriage rules will only be recognised if you apply for its recognition within 30 days of the date... Recognition is straightforward you simply handover the untranslated documentation to the Gemeinde...

Re: Marriage

Ooops! I had to hold myself back from changing the title of the thread.

So I'll say it here instead...Marriage - PAH! ok I'm calm now

Here in CH it isn't as 'easy' for e.g. a woman to take a 'man' for all he is worth. This is Switzerland we are talking about here. Things are divided up all nice & lovely so that you 'should' both have the 'same/similar' standard of living you had.

Although I'm still baffled as to why I now end up oweing my soonish to be ex hubster a few thousand, he keeps the 5.5 apartmetn and my & baby get the old 3 room apartment. (anyway I won't go on, as a when all this happend in Dec my comments were 'tracked' on the forum by my ex-2-b & bashed by another forumer for being in crap situation...)

I'm intrigued as to why you ask these now......planning to ditch her when you get here, or, "just" incase.

I think marriage licence in Vegas is $25
The wedding - depends upon how kitschy you want to be - I say if you're doing Vegas then Elvis must marry you $100

To process the paperwork when you get back - go to the same place you both have registered and give them the wedding certificate. You might want to get duplicates from Elvis as they will keep it, I believe.

I am sorry I did not make myself clear
I just wanted to know the difference in submitting the paperwork for marriage. I wanted to know if there are different procedures for submitting the paperwork if the marriage is abroad versus the marriage here in Switzerland

Of course I have been wondering what my rights as a woman are if he decides to bail out on me.
I just learned that until the mid 1980s women had to have permission from their husbands to work and males had say so over a womans inheritance
I must say this caught me by surprise
outside of europe I am always hearing how liberated women are here, but I am finding it to be a bit conservative

Re: Marriage

You're not registered - do you have an EU passport?

"We" are not registered; your husband is. What does the email say?

Has your husband considered replying to the email to ask this question?
