| | | [General] Maternity and Birthing Experiences
Hi,
I am in 7th month of pregnancy now. We recently came to swiss and staying in Zurich Altstetten. I heard triemli is a good hospital for child birth which is very near to our place. Can any one suggest a good english speaking doctor in this hospital please.
Thank You

no; but I can tell you that I know quite a few people who had babies there, c-sections, the lot - and were very happy.
On the "Maternity island" the rooms are typically 1 or 2 bed too. It's a good place.

I've yet to meet a Doctor here who does not speak English so I think you would be very unlucky to get one who doesn't. As Tremli is not a private hospital you will probably just be seen by whomever is on duty when you go in, this is not a problem though as maternity units are excellent in Zurich. Have you found yourself a ob/gyn to see you through the rest of your pregnancy yet?

Thank you very much Lou , i dint find any GYN/OB yet as we came here only three days back.
we are in the process of applying insurence and as soon as its ready i am planning to visit triemli hosipital.
Do we have to take an appointment mush in advance Lou. As my husband is working and is busy, it would be better for me if we can get an doctor available at weekends for each check up.
And as me and my husband can neither speak or understand german, we are looking for a english speaking GYN/OB with whom i can feel comfortable.

I'd start looking for n ob/gyn now before your insurance is sorted, you never know when you will need one. As you have to insured from when you arrive you would be covered for any bill incurred. Have a search around here, there are already a few posts with recommendations though it may be more difficult to find someone who is open on Saturdays but most Dr's are open from 08:00 so early appointments are possible. Good luck.
You can also look here for a Dr in your area: http://www.doktor.ch/ |

Personally I would go up to the maternity ward at tremli and talk to them. This evening or tomorrow. They will find someone who speaks English (if they can't) to explain what the next steps for your situation should be. They are usually pretty helpful at most hospitals.
I visited 3 hospitals just to get my Gyny and ended up in a 4th hospital and not having my gyny anyway! Paid 200chfs extra per night for a private room (you may want to consider this!!) as it was a public hospital. It turned out to be better all round than Hirslanden (except for the food menu).
FYI - I was asked by 2 of the hospitals to put down 15,000chf deposit. Then I found out through friends that this wasn't normal practice. Just so you know.
Find out ASAP about the health insurance as I know a few people that had issues with insurance companies concerning maternity.

Hi All
I went to Triemli Hospital last week. It was really good and i felt very comfortable. The midwife and doctor both of them spoke good english. I had a general checkup and since this was the first time, i had all the general tests done. And they gave the next appointment date after a month. Will post my next experiences when i re visit.

| | | Zurich Maternity - Hirlsanden or Im Park
Hi there,
We're looking to move to Zurich imminently and look to go to either above Hospitals for delivery of our baby at end of May. We're insured through Allianz for full maternity incl a private room.
The hospitals above are the only ones on our Allianz list. Has anyone had any experience of them for deliveries or can recommend their facilities and staff?
Also, can anyone recommend a good english speaking Obstetrician who practices through them?
We're also interested in Swiss views on childbirth in hospital - e.g. how often induction is used, routine episiotomies, allowing the mother to choose delivery position, access to pain relief etc...
We're new to the site and cant see anything specifically on these Hospitals & unsure of the Swiss medical system so anything you could provide would be most appreciated.

Hirslanden is an excellent clinic as is Im Park. I'd say you also should have no problems with English at either place.
From what I've heard, birthing is also very flexible here. Especially with P1 insurance |

I had my first baby in Klinik im Park, it's a fantastic hospital. It's completely up to you which position you give birth in, they have the equipment & facilities for just about every variation you can think of! They even have a birthing pool but that is on a first come first served basis. The staff are excellent and I had no problem with English as most of the staff spoke it, one of the midwifes is actually English. It's a small maternity unit, all the rooms are private with en-suite facilities.
I used the services of Dr Pierre Villars for that pregnancy, he does births also at the Hirslanden.
If you have any other questions then just ask.

Thanks for the speedy replies!
Do you know how long they normally keep you in hospital for a normal VB?
Also, I assume they allow the baby to stay with you in the room?
Many thanks |

For a straight forward birth the insurance covers you for 5 days, for a c-section it is 7 (should you need one).
Yes, the baby can stay in the room with you at all times but if you need to sleep or if you want to the nurses will take it for a while to let you sleep.
I almost forgot at K im P on your last night in the hospital it's date night! The nurses will look after your baby while you have a special meal with your husband/partner. This can either be in the hospital restaurant or in your room. It's a nice touch before you go home to life with baby .

| | | Expecting first child : Hospital Recommedations needed
Hi ,
We are expecting our first child in early July this year. Though we have already found a good english speaking Doctor we still need to tell her which hospital we would like to have the birth in. Have asked around a bit and the two names which keep coming up are Triemli and University Hospital.
We are not looking for a fancy place - but a decent place with good facilities and ofcourse english speaking doctors around!! It is a first time for us so would prefer not to be utterly clueless!!!
Have been told that visiting the hospitals before hand is a good idea. But havent been able to do it with the house-hunting still going on (!!!). It would be nice to get some first hand experiences from the members of english forum in order to guide or decision.
Cheers! |

Depending on your location in Zurich, I can personally recommend Spital Zollikerberg. I've heard good things about the Natural Birthing House Delphys, near Albrisriederplatz in Zurich-City, and Paracelcus Hospital in Richterswil. Triemli and Uni-Spital have a good reputation too.
