| | | wisdom teeth horror
I am going to have two wisdom teeth removed, same side, top and bottom. And it is to be done by my (new) local Zürich dentist.
My wife, who seems to know a lot more than me about wisdom teeth, told me that she's surprised that this is being done in a dental surgery, since it's the type of thing that might normally be done in a hospital.
Any other opinions about this, maybe by people who have had a similar op?
By the way, an Italian colleague told me that the Italian term for wisdom tooth translates as 'judgement tooth'. Funny - although not as funny as it would be if I didn't have a rendezvous with judgement |

When I had mine removed it was done in an operating theatre, under general - but it was all four at once and they were impacted.
Even with the non-straightforward nature of that, my dentist had said 'or we could do it here in the surgery' so I'm thinking it's probably more normal to have them taken out in the dentist's chair.
So it seems perfectly normal for the dentist to be doing the procedure himself. With hindsight, I wouldn't have taken the risks associated with anasthesia and UK hospitals (MRSA, CC-Dificile, etc.) just for a dental procedure.

He had a wisdom tooth that was so entrenched that the dentist used his knee on my brother's chest to get leverage to pull it out. Then the tooth shattered in the pliers, and the dentist had to remove the individual broken pieces one by one. At least the way my brother described the experience, it was not the best way to spend an afternoon.

It only ends up in hospital if it's particularly complex. Most people I know have had it done at the dentist's surgery. Not me, my dentist says my x-rays show that my mouth is big enough to accommodate all four.
Not sure if that was a compliment or insult, though... | | The following 3 users would like to thank Sandgrounder for this useful post: | |

Mine were in a rotten position and my own dentist just took one look and sent me to a dental surgeon - he removed them in his surgery though, not in hospital.
Had one side done, then, about three weeks later I think, the second side.
I bought some babyfood beforehand. Didn't need much of it, but it was nice to know I had something I would be able to eat. Painkillers did their work but it was very difficult to open my mouth wide enough for 'normal food' as the jaw was extremely stiff from having being held open so long. The dental surgeon said it would be fiddly around the nerve so it took quite a while. I lost a bit of feeling on one side of the chin and lip for about ten days, but it came back by itself.
It didn't affect my wisdom either, so everything was OK.

I had my wisdom teeth removed at the hospital, I guess because they had not erupted yet from the gum line. Therefore they had to be cut out of my jaw. I was under local anesthesia, so I was fully awake during the procedure. The most frightening was actually the administration of the anesthetic and the amount of force that they have to use in order to extract your teeth. Unfortunately when I went back for the second time to get my last two wisdom teeth removed, the anesthetic did not work properly.. Ouch! But generally, after a week I was back to normal again. :-)

I had all of mine extracted (two at a time) in a tooth surgeon's office under anesthesia. The top ones were still under the gum and hadn't descended; the bottom two had come in and caused some minor discomfort. But I had no problems on either occasion. In fact, the surgeon told me, 'the less pain you come in here with, the less pain you'll walk out of here with.'

I took mine out in London and it cost me £500 for all 4. I had just got a job after finishing uni and my savings got wiped out. Actually my student loan + overdraft debt got larger It was full anaesthesia....there were screens on the ceiling playing Madonna video. That is all I remember
So how much would taking out all 4 cost in Switzerland?

| | | Re: wisdom teeth horror I also had mine taken out at the dentists under a local. Of the 4, 2 of them were impacted and had to be cut out, one tooth broke in the pliers and the pieces had to be removed bit by bit also !! But saying that I can't say it was a traumatic experience. I'd rather have that done again then a root canal.....(multiple nerves that would not go to sleep , and being told I would just try to have to sit still while the dentist zinged them repeatedly but thats another story.....) . My face looked like I had a small bath sponge lodged inside each cheek for a few days, and the pain was eased with brufen, so don't worry too much about it. Good luck.

If the dentist had felt that they are going to be a problem he would surely have arranged for them to be in the hospital.
Try not to be anxious - I had mine removed at the dentist , I was sooooooo scared and it was not a problem at all.
I am sure it will be fine |

Mine were also very impacted. Had them done with Bupa (In a private hospital somewhere near Farnham) as it was a 2 month wait at the time on the NHS and I was in real pain. They had to unhinge my jaw first (apparently they used a sort of stick to do this - under anesthetic of course), take them out and then stick my jaw back. I could not close my mouth for 3 days and it was really bruised. Looked like a hamster.
Drinking a pint of beer afterwards was a real struggle.
They must have shattered my teeth, as I spent the next 7 years paying dentists to remove shards of teeth which came up through my healed gums.
20 years later, I can still remember the pain when I woke up after the operation. Breakfast was free - it was an overnight operation - but I did not want to put anything in my mouth, so I declined.
Good luck with yours.

My dears,
I just know that some doctors do not recommend to remove them at all. It`s up to you - if are scared, you can postpone the procedure or cancel forever . At the end we all will die - or having wisdom teeth or not!

Bubbbel | | | | | Usually you don't remove if you don't have to. And you have to if they are causing problems, for example:
- they are in a very bad state (some people don't clean them too well)
- their alignment is not normal (in my case they were not growing up, but sideways - this can cause problems later on with the sinuses). The other option is that they are growing sideways, but in the other direction and they might move other teeth
Diagnostic for both of these cases is extremely simple - either you've loaded lots of CHFs into fixing the tooth, and it's still causing problem, or for the alignment case, the simple pantomogram will give the answer.
As for my experience with removal - I have all four removed, because as I mentioned they were growing in weird directions. I have two sessions, one for each side (makes things a little simpler, because you can normally use the other one for eating). I had the teeth removed in the dental division of the hospital (by my normal dentist) with local anesthesia. Three were pretty simple, but the fourth one had to be broken into pieces and removed one by one. Pain after the anesthesia stopped was minimal.

I also thought that having your wisdom teeth removed was a big job. I went to the dentist last time I was back in the UK as I had some pain and she said I needed a filling in my wisdom tooth. After giving me the injections and trying to drill she said the position of the cavity was too difficult and she would just take the tooth out. There and then (bearing in mind I had already had injections) she took out the tooth and to be honest I only had moderate pain over the next two days. I have an appointment to get one of my other wisdom teeth out next time I'm back as I dread to think how much it would cost me here.

Hey!!
Well...getting your teeth removed is pretty standard ...when it is done at a hospital it is usually because an infection is so bad that you have to be on IV drip antibiotic....but now oral suregons do that also.
Are you going to a general dentist? Or an oral surgeon? Are the teeth being extracted (removed) visible in the mouth or only on x-rays? What type of x-ray did you have done to determine they are needed to be extracted?
Wisdom teeth are extracted so frequently...it really is a different experience for everyone...but honestly majority of people have no problems...

Wifey went to the Zurich university dental clinic and paid around 700 CHF to have two wisdom teeth out under local anesthetic about 10 years ago.
