mailing medication from Canada to Switzerland?

Okay, I've been searching online hoping not to have to post here- but to no avail, I need to know if I will get into any trouble sending perscription medication from Canada to Switzerland? I will be moving to Zurich in August for 12 months, and am unable to get a years supply of contraception (Diane-35) due to my dad's wonky health insurance. Since I am under my dads perscription health insurance here, I was wondering if it would be alright if he mailed them to me in Zurich, probably would have to mail them out twice. Anyone have experience with mailing perscription medication?

Thanks in advance,

-Julia

Not sure what you mean - each person here has to have his / her own health insurance. There aren't any plans that cover more than one (adult) family member. Apart from that: the pill isn't covered no matter where you're insured (would be very surprised if it were in Canada). If you have a prescription for it, head over to Germany and buy it there, medication usually is cheaper there.

As for sending a year's worth of prescription medication via mail: not a good idea. As far as I know you're allowed to get (legal) prescription drugs across the border as long as they're intended for your personal consumption. 12 monthly doses may exceed that limit.

In the US the pill is covered on practically every insurance policy.

I don't see why you can't just take it all with you when you move and just have a dr's note with it in case they ask why you have a year's worth...?

Re: mailing medication from Canada to Switzerland?

Your initial question - I know that it is possible to have medication mailed from the US to Switzerland, direct from the pharmacy, so Canada should be ok. I don't know the limits, but 90 days is ok, and probably 6 months. Not sure about a year. The pharmacy has to state that the medication is for personal use. Something like birth control would not likely be an issue, but I don't know for sure. If your dad sends them, perhaps the pharmacy should put them in an envelope and mark "for personal use".

However, if you are living in Switzerland, there is a requirement that you carry health insurance accepted here. You may still be covered in Canada, but does that cover you in Switzerland? Your post seems to imply that you will be covered by your father's policy while in Switzerland.

Re: mailing medication from Canada to Switzerland?

i had my prescriptions mailed here before i found a doctor from the US. it is for personal use and has my name on the bottle. had a friend do it for me...

also i was told that if i was under US health care insurance then i could use that instead of the swiss insurance if and only if it had/carried international coverage. that it worked or 'counted' for the swiss as having insurance while living here.

Re: mailing medication from Canada to Switzerland?

I am not sure where in Canada you are from but some of the local health units will give you up to a years supply for free. Since you are still on your dad's health insurance you are probably a student and might still qualify, so I would look into it.

Or check with your insurance carrier in Canada, they should cover your prescritption costs while you are away in which case you can get a prescription here and have it filled then submit the claim in Canada. This is probably a good idea anyways since you will be away for a year and should the deatils of your cover when out of the country, just incase there are any problems.

Re: mailing medication from Canada to Switzerland?

It's not allowed to import more than a month's worth of medicine that requires prescription, and the birth control pill falls in this category. (If you don't have a prescription it isn't allowed to import the medication at all.) See this thread.

Re: mailing medication from Canada to Switzerland?

Sorry to confuse, to elabourate, currently I live in Canada and am still covered under my fathers health insurance. I am listed as a student, and am trying to figure out a way to have a years perscription without paying for it (not an hororable pursuit, but my specific medication is quite pricey, a cost I would like to avoid if I can). Since the company does not know that I am taking a year off of school to work in Switzerland (where I will have health insurance, but obviously it will not cover the pill), which leaves me with this problem as a pharmacy will only dispense three months at a time.

Looks like I will be going to my pharmacy to handle the mailing.

Thanks for the advice, and sorry for the confusion!

Re: mailing medication from Canada to Switzerland?

I am thinking about ordering online a homeopathic medicine (2 x 60 ml bottle, i.e. 2 months supply) worth 55 usd + 30 usd tracked shipping (shipment ex USA).

Anyone here done that recently and is willing to share their experience?

Re: mailing medication from Canada to Switzerland?

My experience is that anything you can legally buy here as well is ok to ship, anything that is considered to have to be dispensed by farmacies only could result in having it all shipped back.

Maybe there is a website listing all items that can be safely imported as medication?

I am sure you can import 120 ml of water without any problems. But then why would you, when you can get it here?

Given the fact that you will be over the CHF 65 limit they will stop the package and process it for taxes, duties and handling cost. Anytime they stop something based on the value limit, they have some more time to examine things and think about what you are importing.

Specifically about what you are importing we can't say since you have not mentioned the product. Some homeopathic products may (I say may) be on the list of things that they do not like.

Sometimes things can be found cheaper in Switzerland. Is this what you were looking for?

But the value on the invoice is 55 USD/CHF?

The "taxable" amount is item plus shipping.

Re: mailing medication from Canada to Switzerland?

Unrelated to what donpiedro wants, but pople in this thread are probably interested to know anyway:

The federal court recently ruled (article in German) that any drugs may only be sold online from within Switzerland if the buyer has a "Rezept" (prescription) from his doctor, including drugs solt OTC offline. Ordering and sending from abroad without prescription is Ok though, who cares about the probably bigger risk of fraud, possibly different composition and/or dosage etc.

Not sure if that applies to homoeopathic substances from within Switzerland.

Hey Verbier, just to keep you updated, my FedEx package arrived within 24 hours from the USA without it being checked. Maybe I just got lucky this time?
