Medical Check Up

I had to go for a Medical Check up yesterday, havent been to a hospital for a long time and some things I found quite strange.

The good (lady) doctor asked me to take off my shirt to check my blood pressure and do that thing with Stethoscope, and she said "put off your shirt" (her english was not quite good).

I was kinda surprised to take off my shirt to check my blood pressure?! So I asked you want me to unbutton my shirt or roll up my sleeves or take it all off?

She said "How do you say in English to remove shirt completely" and I said "Take off your shirt." Then she goes "Yes take off your shirt"

Which I did, hesitantly, but still holding on to my shirt, my dignity clapsed firmly in my hands. But she said put it down on the chair! Which I did

Then she took my blood pressure reading and said, "The high is fine, but the Low is a bit Higher, which is maybe because of ermmm..."

I said" Yes its becoz of ermmm... "

Then she asked me if I had any surgery/operation done and I said no, she gave me unbelieving look, are you sure? Then afterwards she saw a cut on the lower part of my spine and and goes "Whats this... was it an operation"

I was like.. NO, I have had no operations, it was an angry cockerel that bit me while I was giving it a hard time

She goes.. its good you have no operations!!

Is it quite common among Swiss people that they have operations?

Then she asked me to lie down and felt my ankles and goes "Good..no swelling arouond here"

I wanted to say Ofcourse, Im not pregnant... YET!!

When "examination" was over, I wanted to say "Ok, its my turn now"
But then I thought humour would probably be lost in translation and I would have a lot more explaining to do

Would have enjoyed more, if I was the doctor

But it was strange for me... the only time I would have a swollen ankle is if I twist it.. and then I wont be able to walk straight?

Why do they have to check that?

Cardiac and Renal function The type of edema, the quality (no Im not joking) and the time when it appears can point to either cardiac or renal function deterioration.
Nice doctor really !

Swollen ankles could be an indication of heart insufficiency

Swollen ankles and/or swollen feet may be the result of any of the following:
Arthritis
Cellulites
Cirrhosis (Liver)
Congestive Heart failure
Deep Vein Thrombosis(DVT)
Fracture
Kidney failure
Obesity
Pseudogout
Joint infection
Malnutrition
Stress fractures
Trauma
And as Angela mentioned above, edema (excess fluid build up)
Thus, swollen ankle or feet results as a condition involving local extremities as well as diseases that can effect the entire body.

Re: Medical Check Up

Just face it, you will NEVER be handed one of those American-style hospital gowns when you go to a doctor or hospital. We (as in we Swiss and Germans) only know of one such curious concept from US TV series. If your doctor tells you to undress, you undress, no fuss. He or she has seen it all before, you know. And for you, ladies, this incudes visits to your gynecologist as well. The advice for modest women is to wear a very wide skirt. And let's not forget about the different ways of administering medicines to your little ones or taking their temperature...

Re: Medical Check Up

I've been made to take off my shirt any time I've worn one that when rolled up it would bunch "too much" over the cuff... which is any time the sleeve went down to my wrist.

In the US they'd take my blood pressure with the cuff over my shirt if the shirt is thin enough (cotton "oxford" button ups for example) but here they are much more particular about accuracy I guess.

Didn't you have to drop your pants too?

I have no idea why you posted this. Do you expect to get your car serviced without the hood being lifted??
