Collar neck muscle pain remedy?

I pulled something in my collar and neck region while doing stomach crunches. I shrugged it off and continued exercising for an hour and probably further damaged it. In the morning my neck was stiff and it was difficult to turn my head. After a week it got lot better. Three weeks on it's better and I can turn my head normally but my collar area has a very tired muscle feeling.

I have been rubbing creams but could do with something strong to get over the final remaining irritation. Can you recommend a medicine that I can ask for at the Apotheke?

Ibuprofen cream or tablets? How much more time do you think it will need?

I agree with Patxi. Those injuries take an eternity to recover (I did it lifting a bag of shopping awkwardly). As well as ibuprofen try some warmth on it as well (hot water bottle or a bath) that helps alleviate it a bit, too, because you shouldn't take Ibuprofen for too long a period.

In addition, find a good place to go for a massage (there are a few recommended on this forum). Injured muscles tend to knot up and this slows the recovery. A good sports masseur can sort it out in a few sessions.

Hard to say. There's no drug that's going to fix it, though. Your body will eventually do it, but massage will help speed it along. If you don't want to pay for one or have squeeze who will rub you, you can pick up a cheap massager at almost any department store.

Re: Collar neck muscle pain remedy?

Having a great case of scoliosis, I get periodic neck pain leading me to walk around like Dr. Evil for days at a time.

I like to avoid pain killers, especially here since I don't know any of the brands

There's the commerical 'Magic Bag' which I've never actually used, but my cousin made me a "homemade magic bag" with a combination of rice, and cinnamon and other stuff. Throw it in the microwave for a min or so, and it provides quite the relief.

No cure, but it definitely eases the pain and allows me to function at a half decent rate.

I used to get pinched nerves in my neck quite frequently from sleeping on my stomach. It was very annoying and the description sounds very similar to what you are describing. Ibuprofen tablets worked for the acute pain but the range of motion issues sometimes took up to a month or more to resolve. I sleep with one of those anatomically shaped pillows now which cured the problem (plus I don't allow myself to sleep on my stomach).

You can try massage (didn't work for me) and I have read that accupuncture/accupressure could work as well. Give it some more time and if it doesn't get better, have a doctor take a look at you. It's possible that it's something more serious but I doubt it.

Re: Collar neck muscle pain remedy?

Patxi I sleep on my stomach a lot and I think that further damaged the pulled muscle on the first night.

You have all been wonderful. Thank you very much.

400 mg of Magnesium per day works wonders.. have taken it for back pain, pulled muscles - after 4 days you'll notice a difference.

Re: Collar neck muscle pain remedy?

Sleeping on your stomach is almost a sure way to get a neck cramp.

If you move your pillow from underneth your head to under your chest with your head on the mattress (when on your stomach) this risk is greatly reduced from my experience.

Not the best position, but when sleeping on the back and both sides is exhausted, this method allows for another option.

Re: Collar neck muscle pain remedy?

What is the theory behind this? I had this recommended when I had screws removed from my femur & I do take it because of another issue but I don't know the reasoning for the recommendation.

I have loads of magnesium sachets but they are 300mg. Where did you get the 400mg figure from?

Re: Collar neck muscle pain remedy?

Magnesium help with muscle relaxation, so is very good when to take when you have pulled one !! I take it daily for a week or so when my back "goes" every now and then. You can buy them over the counter at the Apotheke. Like previously mentioned, it's also found in chocolate which is why it's also helpful when one has PMT and has some chocolate cravings and doesn't want to eat too much

Re: Collar neck muscle pain remedy?

You can also get them in capsule form. I have magnesium complexe, I think they're 150mg per capsule and cost about Fr 25 for 100 of them.

Magnesium relaxes the muscles and stops the tightening around the nerve which makes the pain worse. I had sciatica in both my pregnancies and magnesium was a godsend.

I was told about it years ago from a student of mine who was a trainee pharmacist when she notice I had a stiff neck in class one morning.. she told me that we women do not store magnesium in our bodies (unlike men) and it is an important mineral to take so either take a supplement and/or make sure you eat magnesium rich foods daily.

Ask at the pharmacy, they will have the higher dose behind the counter.
