Marriage Registration

Hello All,

I am here to seek advice for an acquaintance of mine. He is from Pakistan and she is Swiss but they reside outside of Switzerland.

They wish to get married and subsequently have their marriage registered in Switzerland.

Does it matter in which country they get married? In terms of making it easier or more difficult for them to register their marriage in CH?

Does the nationality of the partner matter? And do rules change with it?

Any piece of advice on the above will be highly appreciated. Please point me in the right direction. Many thanks

Re: Marriage Registration

It should actually be easier to get married abroad and then register the marriage with the local Swiss embassy. The embassy in the country they plan to marry should be able to tell them exactly which papers are required of both partners.

Re: Marriage Registration

Nationality of spouse not relevant. Must register at Swiss Embassy in country of marriage. Swiss spouse should report marriage to the commune of origin.

I second this opinion. It's a bigger pain to get married in Switzerland than to report it after the fact!

Re: Marriage Registration

Whilst not identical I have a similar question....My partner and I are British citizens living in Switzerland on B permit. We intend to marry in the UK later this year. Is it simply a case of taking the marriage certificate to our local Gemeinde after the fact or do we need to pre-warn the authorities as this will have an impact on our civil status, tax and goodness knows what else?

I will also ask in the Gemeinde but would like to know some other experiences as well.

Any help appreciated,

Chris

I was married here but they should accept an untranslated notarised copy of your marriage certificate....

Re: Marriage Registration

I was married abroad (to a Swiss, I'm American), and we told the local authorities after the fact. It made no difference to my permit (I have a B permit that is dependent on my employer) and they automatically adjusted the taxes for us-all changes were back-dated to the date of our marriage.

Bottom line, it was fine to marry first, tell later.

Re: Marriage Registration

I don't know about getting married abroad but I married my Swiss man in Switzerland and it was really simple... just needed a recent copy of long version birth certificate (less than 6 months old) I ordered it on the Internet, my passport, and proof of my address (also less than 6 months old), 2 witnesses and we were married
