Cure for cancer: CURRY!

Good to know that so many EF activities have involved combatting cancer head-on:

Quote:
An extract found in the bright yellow curry spice turmeric can kill off cancer cells, scientists have shown.

The chemical - curcumin - has long been thought to have healing powers and is already being tested as a treatment for arthritis and even dementia.

Now tests by a team at the Cork Cancer Research Centre show it can destroy gullet cancer cells in the lab.

cool, i cooked a few things with tumeric recently.

but you know, i always take these things with a pinch of salt - it seems every month or so we find that XYZ fights cancer, or MNO is bad for you.

I think salt can cause cancer so don't take your curry with a pinch of salt.

I came across this site which may interest those who are desperate for a
cure of a beloved one in the family. The information therein invokes a lot
of thought about ordinary things in the way human physiology works:

Original phrasing: An extract found in the bright yellow curry spice turmeric can kill off cancer cells

Does not sound the same as Cure for cancer: Curry.

But I am a linguist, so I tend to see evil things in every sentence. Sorry for that.

Re: Cure for cancer: CURRY!

Curcumin, the active ingredient in tumeric, has been the focus of numerous studies at research universities/centers in the States with interesting results. Even the American Cancer Society has a page devoted to tumeric/curcumin.

Here's an excerpt:

Some researchers believe turmeric may prevent and slow the growth of a number of types of cancer, particularly tumors of the esophagus, mouth, intestines, stomach, breast, and skin. One researcher reported that curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, inhibited the formation of cancer-causing enzymes in rodents.

Turmeric is promoted mainly as an anti-inflammatory herbal remedy and is said to produce fewer side effects than commonly used pain relievers. Some practitioners prescribe turmeric to relieve inflammation caused by arthritis, muscle sprains, swelling, and pain caused by injuries or surgical incisions. It is also promoted as a treatment for rheumatism and as an antiseptic for cleaning wounds. Some proponents claim turmeric interferes with the actions of some viruses, including hepatitis and HIV.
Supporters also claim that turmeric protects against liver diseases, stimulates the gallbladder and circulatory systems, reduces cholesterol levels, dissolves blood clots, helps stop external and internal bleeding, and relieves painful menstruation and angina, chest pains that often occur with heart disease. It is also used as a remedy for digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, Crohn's disease, and illnesses caused by toxins from parasites and bacteria.

If you read the first post on the above referenced forum you will read a comment about blood pH change. If you know anything about biology you will remember that even the slightest change in blood pH (which is a buffer, BTW) usually results in immediate death. If the mechanism described actually works as stated you would have just as much a chance of killing yourself quickly. So much for the magical cures offered on that websight.

I lost my dad to Pancreatic Cancer, it was the most hurtful period of my life and i still have an issue about it! took him 3 months from biopsy to the end...I know for many people it seems silly and unrealistic to even look at these theories, but i remember sitting hours and hours on the computer searching desperately for any article on the possible treatments, i even bought a herbal tea which was a hit in US and begged him to drink it told you, got an issue...

Re: Cure for cancer: CURRY!

Tala, Sorry to hear about your dad. Prior to my mom’s death from cancer (also a very short time from diagnosis to her death), I was blissfully ignorant of the ways that cancer can impact an entire family. Ardneham is absolutely right, we need to have hope, which is why loved ones spend hours searching the internet for possible cures. Understanding this need for hope, irrational as it may be, isn’t possible until someone has been in the helpless position of watching a loved one die.

After watching the degradation of my mother and thinking that dying from cancer is an awful way to have your life end, it’s a bit of a consolation to read about current research in the hopes that other people won’t have to go through the same thing.

To return to the subject of this thread -- Curcumin (not curry!) keeps popping up as the subject of some interesting research. I included the link for information from the American Cancer Society in an earlier post in this thread.

Two weeks ago, the BBC series, Grow Your Own Drugs, featured a traditional Malaysian drink made from tumeric that is supposed to help with arthritis.

Very pithy, I say better to make the most of the life you have left than waste it on the woo in your article.

Re: Cure for cancer: CURRY!

What scientists are "discovering" now, many an Indian kid's grandma has been saying since we were young. We use a lot of turmeric in Indian cooking, and also use it as an all purpose antiseptic - I was always given milk with a pinch of turmeric to cure an upset stomach, some people use this to alleviate their stomach ulcers, etc.

It is good that the antiseptic properties of turmeric have now been "proven" now so a lot more people can now accept it, and great news for those suffering from cancer.

Re: Cure for cancer: CURRY!

Cure for cancer is apparently ionised water according to the user who thought it wise to spam me because of my post here. If you have something to say of interest to all, please post it to the thread in future, though I suspect you wouldn't like the bad press.
