Re: Asthma

As someone who's had experience of Seretide since it came to market, I can tell you that it is fantastic and, if used properly, your Ventolin or other post-reaction inhaler will expire before it is empty.

Life is perfectly normal, carry on Especially if you know what triggers your reaction...

I read about people saying they took weight on this treatment, did you see a difference?

no - I blame beer...!
With the higher dosage, you might have to be careful but check with the doc; also I would expect that your dosage perhaps is dropped as time goes by.

Depends on your inhaler. Some inhalers are cortisone based and cortisone can make you retain water. i.e. put on weight. I didn't think the levels of cortisone were quite that high in the inhalers though.

It might be a good idea to go to an ENT (Ears, Nose and Throat specialist) because what you are describing doesn't sound like asthma at all. Asthma is a lung disorder/inflection and has nothing to do with mucus. Instead of getting second hand info from us forumites go see a specialist.

P.S. I was treated for asthma for more than 10 years only to find out that I don't have asthma at all. Always get a second opinion, especially with problems that have no definitive test.

Seretide, like Symbicourt, is effectively 2 different medications in one inhaler. The salmetrol (Serevent TM) is the long acting bronchodilator part, and fluticasone (Flixotide TM) is the corticosteroid (anti inflammatory) part.

Seretide 500 seems like quite a high dose to me (I use a Seretide 125 2 puffs twice a day), and I'm also surprised you haven't been prescribed with a fast acting bronchodilator such as Salbutamol (Ventolin TM) as the Salmeterol part will not help you in the event of an attack - doesn't work fast enough. Every asthma sufferer should have a Ventolin, or equivalent IMO, just in case - even if you never need to use it.

Disclaimer - I'm not a doctor, and what I've said is based on purely my experience as an asthmatic. Your needs may well be different to mine.
Well I am on the heavy side, so probably that has something to do with dosage. >Anyways I love my >Seretide

I think she was refering to the dosage for Seretide >(depending on the person's weight).
As for Asthma not being ASthma, I believe this is particularly important in smokers who can develop a bronchitis astham look alike...

Re: Asthma

Hi Nil,

I have (had quite severe) asthma. Was in the hospital earlier this year with pneumonia which only showed itself after 3 months!!! So a large abscess formed in my lung. Not fun.
They never could figure out 1) which pneumonia I had, or 2) why I got it in the first place. The only sort of reasonable explanation was that I way overused my seretide 500. My asthma has/d gotten 100x worse since moving here to Ireland…I think it must be the humidity, I couldn’t make it to the Dr and was without my ventolin for about a week, so I was taking the seretide about 5-6 (or more) times a day....

Anyhow, I still get extremely bad asmta attacks, any time of the day but often worse at night. The best thing is to be diligent about taking the seretide, even when you are feeling better and you don’t think you need it. and make sure you always have your fast acting one with you.

I also have the thick mucus in the back of my throat. It gets a lot worse after taking the ventolin, feels like I am coughing up phlem (but apparently I am not since the x-rays and blood tests seem to be fine – I still see the pneumonia dr regularly because I was soo sick they want to keep tabs for this whole year…). The only thing that helps me, especially at night when it can get so bad that I feel like I cant breath and I can’t swallow, is a herbal remedy. I think you have this company there called A.Vogel. The one that works with thinning the mucus is the Ivy-Thyme (I have no idea the German nor French translation of this for you, sorry).it has a different name in north America, but here is what it will look like (the plant on the front always looks the same)

I put 30 shakes (not sure how many drops) into the glass and fill it up and leave that by my bedside table. Whenever I wake up with that feeling in my throat I drink some and go back to sleep. I’ll normally finish it throughout the night. Garlic also helps with mucus thinning, more long term however, as does drinking plenty of water, but during the night this is not possible!!
I have no idea what causes it at all. I agree it could be post-nasal drip, but then I dont know why it is worse after taking the ventolin...?

Hope this helps you. And I hope for you it is also nothing serious. In the meantime if you can find this remedy it will at least help you sleep through the night.

Hi Nil

It's sounds like post nasal drip...this produces a lot of sticky hard to shift mucus at the back of the throat. Can be caused by allergies. See your dr, he will probably prescribe a nasal spray or something to help. also make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids.

cheers

Cath

Well 5-6 times of seretide a day is 3 times the recommended dosis! Nil has been prescribed to use it twice a day, Im sorrry your >Asthma has gotten worse, I am positive it is the huidity.
As for Ventolin making the mucus worse, the thing is that ventolin will make you expectorate and makes the mucus more liquid, so it is not that it is worse, it is that you are getting rid of what is making you sick. >Anyways, people who have Asthma are likely to have other allergies such as allergic rhinitis...hence the slime.
Your pneumonia sounds like atypical pneumonia...hope you get better soon.

Re: Asthma

also look into (if you are into this...) a homeopathic dr or acupuncturist. my son's asthma is pretty much non-existent since seeing a naturopath years ago and although i can tell you what he took- the truth is that these things are very dependent on you own constituency, so it's better you see what s/he recommends... but definitely looking into. also, a regular breathing practice in the evening can help when you feel your lungs are quite tight...

best of luck!

Re: Asthma

I was told by my doctor that one of the main side effects of Seretide is oral thrush, esp at the higher doeses (500mg 2x a day). I always made sure I rinsed my mouth out after my dose. But Seretide was really a life saver for me!!

That was always a side effect associated with the steriod based inhalers - becotide, flixotide etc. Fortunately I've yet to suffer from it.

thanks Angela. I am indeed on the mend. I was perscribed the same I think, 2x per day, but I was just at a loss for what to do, and I was literally having a mild asthma attack everday and nothing was helping....
But I am massively into the whole 'natural' scene, so I've been taking pretty high doses of olive leaf extract and oregano oil, and it could be just luck but I managed to not even catch a cold since the pneumonia! (nearly 7 months now). Hoping it's the oregano and olive leaf...

I agree that the mucus could be caused by allergies, as could the asthma (likely moulds in the air is what the Dr said) but so far my Dr just said there is no need to do an allergy test (???) whatever!
I do feel like the mucus is something in the lungs that I am getting rid of, which makes me a bit paranoid since the pneumonia when I was coughing up nasty bits, but so far the Dr doesn’t think so.....and the healthcare system in Ireland is so confusing to me! Not sure how to get around it and not pay a fortune at the same time...would like to get a handle on it though. For me, being diagnosed with asthma hasn’t led feeling better unfortunately. But oh well…no more panicking attacks at least…

Nil, I do hope It leads to better things for you. Asthma is horrible to live with. I just cannot think of any worse feeling than not being able to breath despite your best efforts…

Re: Asthma

I can't relate to the asthma thing, good luck, Nil, with getting your airways strong again, though.

I have only notice the unswallable knoedel on the back of my throat eversince they started heating like crazy at night. Might have something to do with super dry air, dry nose, irritated airways? Have you tried a humidifier? We have a cold one (mechanical one) and it seems to coold the air as well aside of the humidity (we can't switch the radiators off).

The thing with me, it's like that all around the year! I'm always swallowing mucus.

I am little bit scared with the blood test for allergies. I hope it's not me reacting to the cats... I can't find someone for the small one, so if I can't keep the old one either... Anyway, lets build the bridge before to cross the river!

I understand your desperation, I hate t when I get bronchitis due to a viral infection (like now) and there is nothing I can do but just stay home and be bored...Use your medicines and if you find that herbs are helping it is great but check with your doctor always as some herbs can contain active ingredients. I drink fennel tea for cough and it is great but I would never leave my ventolin...are you using that as well?
