I use Cotton Bottoms from Tommee Tippee, they are the type that come in three parts, outer cover, cloth nappy and liner. I have found them great. My little girl has never had nappy rash and I've never had a problem with leaking. I would definitely recommend them.
I soak them and then wash them with the rest of the laundry. I bought them on line from Tommee Tippee as I didn't have much luck finding any in Geneva. I was told that they were not popular in Suisse Romand although they are more common in the Swiss German areas, so I don't know if you can find them easier there.

There is a lot of great advice here about all the different kinds (all in one, separate nappy and wrap, ones you fold, etc etc) as well as advice about how to wash them, how many you need).
My mind boggles as to how my mother managed with 5 kids in 7 years. I do vaguely remember a hoover twin tub and lines full of snowy white squares. I reckon quite a bit of boiling went on.
