Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

We are looking for a pre-school for our son and found one in Meilen - it is called Pre-school Mouse Club and is run by Jet English School in Meilen. Classes are conducted in English. Prices seems to be lower then in bilingual schools and they are much more flexible (attendance, withdrawal policy etc.).
Does anyone heard about it? Any feedback? I would be very grateful for any opinion.

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Pree-school Mouse Club

I have heard of it and also worked there for a short time.

As far as I know, the Mouse Club is not intended as a pre-school which children attend daily. It is a language school and children attend for a day or two a week. The idea is to introduce non-English speaking children to English. Unless the philosophy has changed a great deal, I can't imagine that it is what you are looking for.

I expect you already know that there is a pre-school in Uetikon am See (Tandem) which is bi-lingual, other than that I'm afraid I don't know any others.

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Pree-school Mouse Club

Yes, I know it is a language school but they use a term 'pre-school'. I would like my son to spend there two-three half-days per week, play with other children and be exposed to English.
I just would like to know if it is a place you can recommend as a friendly, safe environement for a child?

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Pree-school Mouse Club

All I can tell you is that the people who work there don't have any qualifications in teaching young children. They are qualified language teachers.

As far as I recall, there are 2 teaching rooms and a kitchen. The kids will be confined to one room and language classes for adults and/or children will be taking place in the other room and/or kitchen.

It probably is safe, but you must remember that it is a language school rather than a pre-school. Facilities are pretty limited. I gave them a whole lot of videos and books that my kids had grown out - there wasn't a lot else there. If you are not a native English-speaker and want your child to be introduced to English then it may be for you. If I were you, I'd have a good look at the facilities, ask for details of the programme they offer, ask if they are registered as a pre-school and ask what qualifications the teachers hold.

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Pree-school Mouse Club

I've had friends whose children have attended the Jet School and I agree that it isn't intended to be a preschool as such, but that they have chosen to use that name to indicate the level of language taught. It seems quite small and I doubt they have any area for children to play.

Have you considered the Learning Tree School at the WAC (Womens Activity Centre) in Uster? My daughter went there a couple of mornings a week for a year or so. It is an English preschool that takes place every morning, although you choose how many mornings you would like your child to attend. We loved it. You can check it out at www.wac.ch

They also run lots of different playgroups for younger children and English classes. It's also not as expensive as many of the bilingual or international options.

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Pree-school Mouse Club

Another english-speaking preschool with full-day care (English-only) is www.childrenfirst.ch
It's right next to Englishviertelstrasse tram stop, in Hottingen.

There is also www.happynest.ch
It's an english-only preschool with short attendances possible - in Oerlikon.

d'Insle Montessori Schule in Signaustrasse has full-time and half-day preschool - bilingual German/English. www.dinsle.ch - The 'english' staff are fluent - Swiss/Swedish/Canadian/Dutch/Australian/Irish across the various classes....and they do French as well.

On the other side of the lake, there is a new Montessori preschool starting in August 2010 - www.houseofkids.ch - they will have a new 0-3 programme and also have an established 3-6 class (age range) - the 3-6 (preschool) is being relocated so the staff and most of the children are moving across to the new site...and it will be bilingual German/English.

Tandem, someone else mentioned, bilingual German/English.

There is an english-speaking preschool at Hegibachplatz - don't know if it's any good, but it's here:

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

Preschool at Jet English School in Meilen is a great place to bring your children. The groups are small and therefore, each and every preschooler is provided with lots of care and attention. Groups are restricted to 6-7 children.

I was very surprised to hear someone say that the teachers are not qualified. I know for a fact that that is not the case. The teachers are dedicated, caring and most definitely qualified.

In the mornings, the preschoolers have the whole of the downstairs and the teachers also make use of the school playground next door so that kids can have a good run about.

As to safety, the kids are well taken care of. I would suggest going round there and seeing for yourself.

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

If you read my post properly, you will see that I said the teachers at Jet English School are qualified language teachers and not teachers of young children. There is a difference.

I myself do not regard it as a pre-school, but rather as a language school. My previous post was intended as helpful information to a parent looking for something specific. It was not intended as a criticism of the school, merely to accurately represent what goes on there. I am glad that you are satisfied with it.

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

Dear Klostersgirl,

I understood what you meant but I don't think that is the case either. It may of course changed since you were there (looking through the posts again - since I don't want to be accused of not reading posts accurately - I understand that you worked there? When was that?) I shall ask my friend who works there to put up the qualifications on Englishforum. Of course you are entitled to your opinion (as am I).

Many regards and have a nice evening Klostersgirl

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

Thank you for your response. As you say, this thread was begun in 2010 and I can assure you that when I worked at JET, teachers were CELTA qualified only. At that time, the pre-school was confined to one room and allowed the use of the kitchen at lunchtime. Lessons took place in all the downstairs rooms during the morning and the kitchen was also used as a classroom.

I did not want to be pushed into saying anything negative about the school, other than that the pre-school was more of a language school and did not offer the facilities that other pre-schools in the area offered - this was more than fair comment at the time of writing. I still do not wish to make negative comments about someone's business, but at the time I was working there, the school was going through an enforced period of change due to the fact that the whole teaching staff, bar one member, left of their own volition. It may be that the school is now under new management or indeed that the school's difficulties have been ironed out and that the pre-school has changed direction. I hope that this is the case.

To my understanding, this forum is not to be used as free advertising for anyone's business and to that end, I would imagine that posting the qualifications of Jet School employees on this forum would be in contradiction of that rule, not to mention of no interest to anyone.

I reiterate that my comments were valid in 2010 and the fact that things might have changed does not invalidate them now.

As your only two posts to this forum have been to make positive comments on JET School on a thread that was last posted on more than 2 years ago, and making a judgement on your chosen name "iluvteaching", I am left wondering whether your sole intention is to provide some free advertising for the school.

I also wish you a very pleasant evening.

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

There have been similar situations to this so often that members' ability to spot them would put Sherlock Holmes in the Shade. I've reached the point when any post about a school or other financial-gain-organisation which is written by a new member or one with very few posts gets a mental 'take this with a pinch of salt' sticker on it.

Quite honestly, it looks as if you might teach at that school - if you do, I think it very unfair to try to pull the wool over people's eyes by 'recommending' something in this way. Some of the newcomers on English Forum are relying on us to give them correct and helpful information. Regretably, many of them haven't yet acquired the eagle eye of a Klostersgirl.

I am not saying that the school has not changed and might be suitable for the poster who wanted help, but facts are necessary and disagreeing with members will not always help your cause.

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

Ahh on checking my email what do I see!

To be honest if I was going to be "advertising" I would have been more clever about it. I'm interested in the Meilen area and hence looked for Meilen posts. At the international school we have students join us who have been with Jet before and were happy there hence I replied to the post. The principal even told me that they have a good reputation. I've mentioned the qualification thing to JET and I'm sure they would be more savy then me and ask the administrator of the forum and not do anything like pulling the wool over peoples eyes or whatever I'm beening accused of. English teachers of course have the habit of gathering at events and meeting eachother at seminars so it's funny to see comments about teachers/schools you know.

Thanks and enjoy what's left of the evening

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

I don't think there was an accusation there, or did I really slip up somewhere? And in spite of the clarification, I still think the phrasing of your first post was misleading. The matter seems much clearer but it would still be interesting to know whether all the staff who work with the youngsters are qualified as 'teachers of young children' or are they qualified 'language teachers'.

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

Well considering what you and klostersgirl wrote it sounded that way. Talk about being ganged up on on your first day on the forum. Well I can't comment on every teacher there only the one or two I've met and they are qualified to teach young learners. Of course I also don't know when they started there and all that kind of detail.

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

Working on here makes one very, very suspicious. New members who dig up old posts... alarm bells. Writing positive info about a school which has had a 'slightly negative point' mentioned ... more alarm bells. And, just occasionally, it all turns out to be a false alarm. But not often.

Well just imagine you saw something on here about some people you knew and you knew it to be untrue wouldn't you feel compelled to write something too???
Anyway, I think I shall stick to talking about hiking, i phones and that sort of thing. BTW recommend kindle touch (just my opinion) competitors feel free to join the forum and disagree with me!!!!

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

If the info I read on EF and considered incorrect was from a couple of years back, I would say that things have changed for the better. That has been the case with several other schools on here too. But your first post sounded like an Ad for the school and not like a positive comment from someone who knows 'one or two' of the teachers. If you want to add that children who were at that school were happy there, I don't think anyone would quibble with that. Not even Longbyt.

To be honest I entered Meilen saw those posts and didn't really take note of the date until I got replies. It was only after I was told by Klostersgirl to read her post properly that I saw the year etc. Everything seems clearer in hindsight.

Re: Jet English School Meilen / Preschool Mouse Club

Hello everyone. Ray from Derby UK here. I worked at Jet School in Meilen in 2005 and really enjoyed it. I dont know what the situation is now but then it was a great school with CELTA qualified teachers who were caring and professional. Jeannette Phillips was the owner at the time and ran the school very well indeed and was highly respected by all as well as being an excellent cook. Yes the teachers are language teachers but they are the best. I have worked at a number of language schools in Spain, .'IH school in Geneva and the International Business College in Bournemouth, UK.
