I'm just wondering about the availability of birth control in Switzerland.
I know condoms can be bought in various shops,
what about birth control pills??
Is a perscription needed and at what price?

You do need a prescription for the pills, and insurance will not cover it (they may for medical reasons). It's about 50 chf for a 3 month supply. The Coop Apotekes give you a 'pill card' and when you get to 12 months you get a free box.

The cost may depend on the brand, but your doctor should have samples for you to get started/ try them out as well.

I think I paid about 70 for a 6 month supply. Might be cheaper to buy it in bulk I guess. Or depends on what kind your doctor writes you a prescription for.

Generally they always write the prescription for one year to ensure that you come back and get a pap smear, checked out and make sure that your birth control is actually working for you. You would be surprised how many women stick with the same pill even though it makes them depressed, pimply, fat, lose hair, no sex drive, whatever. The doctor just wants to get it right, and you should too.

You might want to check out English speaking Ob / Gyn, Zurich too or do a search on gynos on the forum. Good info!

Forgot to say that in some cases, apothekes will usually give you one month's pills without a prescription if you are really in need of them but can't see your gyno yet. But don't count on it.

Don't forget female condoms, but I'm not sure you'll find them in various shops....

Cost me about 750chf for Mirena...no rebate...ouch! Plus four trips to the Gynaecologist - ended up around 1200chf out of pocket... better be worth it

Mirena is a hormone based IUD. The copper based IUDs are way cheaper (my wife using it).
