Hello, everyone. We are living in Basel and thinking about getting ready for a baby. I would like to know any of your experience delivering a baby at Merian Iseln hospital or Bethesda Hospital. The gynecologsit whom my GP recommended me is an affiliate doctor at Bethesda Hospital, but it's little far from my husband's office. He works close to the Unispital Basel.

Unispital is one of our choice, but as I have a private insurance, I would like to know about private hospitals in Basel also.

Any comments on any past or current experience is very appreciated. Thank you verz much.

Bethesday is very good - had all 3 there. Very good experience all three times. If they have room and you have the possibility, husband can stay in the same room as you (costs more of course).

Food and support is really good.

Downside is that while it can do operations, it is not equiped for emergencies, so if your child needs emergency treatment you could end up hospitalised at Bethesda while your child is over at the Kinderspital in town.

Thanks so much for your quick reply! I didn't know that they don't have a facility for emergency care for kids. Then maybe Unispital, at the end not a bad choice..

Can't recommend Basel Unispital highly enough. Our baby was born there August 2009. Great rooms, fantastic staff (really caring and supportive).
Only down side... there is no A/C in the individual rooms (just in birthing rooms) so if you are having a baby in July/August it is hot in the rooms. Good for baby... not so good for mother.
About having private insurance.... It really depends on availability. Last year was a record year for births in Basel. At certain times people with private/full insurance could not get a private room because all rooms were full. Mind you if you can't get a private room you will only be sharing with one other person..max.

Thanks for your comment. I`m so used to the life without A/C, I really didn't think about it. If this could be the only down side of Unispital, considering location to Kinderspital and husband's work place, it might be really not bad...still lots to think.
