Swiss Marriage tax - why do married couples get taxed more still?
Married couples are taxed more than singles. If my wife and I were able to file our taxes as individuals we would pay less tax.
Last year a referendum was passed that provided a tax credit to marry couples to try to remove this inequity (marriage tax). Even though there is this new marriage credit I have discovered that my wife and I will pay about 10% more in tax than if we were able to file as single people. What is going on here? The marriage tax is smaller, but it definitely still exists. How can we correct this?
Is it time to create a referendum that truly equalizes this situation?
