Can someone help? What/Who is Intrum Justitia? How to deal with it?

Apparently a credit rating company, but they also double as debt collector with a very bad reputation.. As I have heard, they are often used when dubious companies try to collect on an invoice, for services that you may or may not have received... lots of legal threats and the like.

What has your experience been so far?

Well Swiss Intrum Justitia has been hounding my wife about a 10 year old debt her ex racked up using her name. How can we clear this?

If it was done while they were married, then I think hire a lawyer. I think you need one in this, anyways. If they were not married, I still think it might be hard to prove.

Not too sure what Swiss Law was 10 years ago, is she jointly responsible for debts when married then ? They may have a case.

If not, ask them to supply proof that your wife incurred the debt, ask for signed forms of proof. Tell them that you will instigate harassment proceedings against them if they continue to call you. Leave them an email address and let them know they may only contact you via this address, and that you will block / ignore all other calls.

You may want to consider (reflect on this) giving them the ex's contact details. If he forged signatures or gave false information, it should be a matter for the debtor and the Police and not you.

The issue is the signature was forged and they can not produce the signature document. The ex is now out of Switzerland. Could Intrum Justitia start collection after 10 years with no proof.

They will try their dammed hardest and become a real pain. If you can put up with hassle until they give up, fight them all the way. If a large sum is involved, you may buy some peace and quiet through a solicitor acting on your behalf.

Yes, so far they have been trying hard. On the last call they mentioned going to collection and I am wondering after 10 years what has changed? Is this an idle threat?

IJ are European wide and have one of the worst reputations in the industry. Be ready to stand your ground firmly and don't be surprised when they ignore or "lose" any communications from you.

My advice would be to deal only by letter, registered, and preferably through a lawyer.

I used to work for a company in the UK who used them for bad debt collections. We dumped them after their highly aggressive and legally dubious methods started impacting our brand. I can't imagine their Swiss arm is any better.
