Re: Can you keep Swiss bank account if you move?

That sounds as if it's a consequence of the recent GB-Swiss tax agreement that was signed recently.

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxtreaties/ukswiss.htm

I would guess that rather than charging UK customers fees to keep the accounts open, they've decided it's not worth their while. So UK as well as US citizens are now being dropped by the banks.

I'm surprised that UBS is doing it though. They're getting geared up for the FATCA implimentation so I would have thought they could deal with UK requirements. But then the UK is probably using a different system to the US so it will cost them even more to implement - which makes dropping customers the cheaper option I suspect.

Exactly. Do I need any particular experience to comment on things? How much experience do I need?

Anyway since you do have the experience, would the post necessarily be cheaper than the bank or landlord? It would be nice to know for future reference.
I think it would not be reasonable to expect any ex landlord to be acting as aforwarding agency.

May depend on your nationality. If you're American or are going to work in the US the answer will definitely be no you can't, but not sure about any others.
Not necessarily. I am not an American (but I am a "US person" for tax purposes) and moved to the US, and my bank let me keep all my accounts, credit card included.

My impression is that the whole thing is really random, and banks seem to decide on a case-by-case basis.

Um, which bank? And how much are they going to charge you for the privilege I wonder? When did you move to the States?

UBS.
Same monthly fee I used to pay before I left, as long as I continue keeping a certain account balance.
I left CH end of November.

Well, good for UBS. Maybe they are changing their policy a bit. It would certainly make things easier for Americans going home if they do.

Hey BT! Nice to see you back! Hope you are settling in.

I wonder if UBS let you keep the account because you're not an American citizen and so your tax and reporting status can change from time to time? It seems to me as though the primary targets of Swiss banks right now are American citizens and their spouses/families.

Hey there! Settling in very well, thank you

It could be as you say, although the reporting requirements are the same if you are a non-citizen, but US person for tax purposes, as for US citizens. Perhaps they are more relaxed with a non citizen, as I said, decisions on these policies by banks look totally random to me because I keep hearing different things depending on whom I talk to!

I'll tell you this, upon leaving I was fully prepared to having to close my bank accounts, so it was a nice surprise to be allowed to keep them!

Partial correction/ clarification to this thread, so people don't get their hopes up and my posts above don't appear misleading: in recent (very extensive) discussions with UBS, after they sent me a whole bunch of stuff to sign, it was made perfectly clear that they let me keep my accounts in CH due to the temporary nature of my US work visa, even though I am a US person for tax purposes. If I had been a citizen or a green card holder, fuggedabaudit!

Also, should the situation change in the future (i.e. should my stay become permanent) unless their policy changes, I will be "kindly requested" to close my accounts. So it looks like at some point in the not-so-distant future, it will be Green Card vs Swiss Bank Account.

I guess the choice for me will depend upon whether I am staying in the US or coming back to Europe. As of right now, Green Card is winning - Washington is truly a fantastic city.

@glennsche: got your PM, let me fumble through my papers this weekend and find that contact name for you. Cheers!

Living abroad - want to keep my bank account

Hi everyone,

Apparently when you move outside of Switzerland you become an 'international client' and therefore pay more for your account? Is this necessarily the case or is it more an attempt by the bank to get more money out of you?

Are there any alternatives to this?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

EDIT:

Ok, just found an article (in French) about this:

http://www.lematin.ch/suisse/suisses...story/12732075

I know UBS and CS charge more if you live abroad. Any idea which banks DONT do this? I have a Raiffeisen account so I'm hoping I can just transfer everything to them (from my current UBS account).

Re: Living abroad - want to keep my bank account

As you are Swiss (stated in an old post) I think keeping the account is not a problem, but yes the fees will probably go up. However, if you're moving to the U.S. you might run into bigger headaches.

There are a few suggestions in this thread that may be helpful as well: Can you keep Swiss bank account if you move?

Re: Living abroad - want to keep my bank account

Thanks for your reply. Yes I am Swiss, and I'm looking through the other related topics now.

A bit of a cheeky question: can the bank really find out that I've moved if I still provide an address in Switzerland?

Re: Can you keep Swiss bank account if you move?

I asked this question in another thread, thought I'd ask here as well. If you simply leave without telling them (and still have someone staying at your Swiss address who can receive mail for you), can they actually find out?

What is the pathway of solution, for Europeans who leave the country?
Is there any problem to maintain swiss bank accounts?

Not sure, can they check with your commune or canton if you declared that you were leaving the country?

Swiss confidentially, they can't check with anyone, it's a criminal offence for them to even confirm you have an account.

Change your banking address to a friends address who is happy to receive your mail. Simple.

Make sure said friend doesn't read your mail

I have my bank set up that I never receive any mail related to my accounts.(all electronic) Maybe once a year they send me promotional material, and every 2 years a new Maestro card. If you only have a savings account, you wont get that
