buy beer
If you had purchased £1,000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you would have £49.00 today.
If you had purchased £1,000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you would have £33.00 today.
If you had purchased £1,000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you would have £0.00 today.
But, if you had purchased£1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for recycling refund, you would have received £214.00.

Long term or short term?
And what is your risk appetite?
And roughly how is your current investment portfolio split?

You should buy anything but those two. Well, if you know some land that's special, please PM but otherwise, no.
Select 5 top quality emerging markets mutual funds (Next 11, BRIC etc) and begin buying progressively now. Forget about the money for at least 4 years (it's going to be bumpy!). I just bought into an Iraq fund with 5% of my assets. Total punt really and I won't look for around 10 years. If it disappears then so be it.

Every currency on the planet has failed and people have always gone back to gold - but at almost $2,000 per ounce, not sure if the value will hold up & for how long.
Investing in food might be wiser - wheat, corn, etc is skyrocketing and we'll be facing worldwide food shortages possibly in our lifetime.
Or, you can just invest in CHF |
