Registering a car in the US while overseas

Hi boys and girls,

so I am in a bit of a kerflufffle. It's personal property tax time in the state where my vehicle is registered back in the US, and before I came here I moved it "officially" with the DMV from the county where my home is (which has a lower tax rate) to the county where one of my most trustworthy friends lives (which I have just learned has a higher tax rate).

Taxes are due at the beginning of October, the tax rate in the new county is 3x what it is in the old county. Ergo, before October I'd like to move the vehicle "officially" again to save money, and I'm thinking either to my parents' home in Texas or back to my my old address (which will be more difficult because there's nobody there to receive the bills), or to a completely different state all together. I've read that Alaska is pretty cheap for car taxes.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

There are states without personal property taxes. Pennsylvania might be one... Know anyone there? You might be better off to move it to your parents though.

Just pay the bill. For me, the hassle to move, reregister, getting friends and family involved is worth just paying the bill. Then have your friend sell the car.

If it was 3x $10 then it would make sense. Unfortunately it's a LOT more than that.

We have our's registered in Georgia, and we just pay the bill. Didn't want to go through all the hassle.

So you would like to move the registration but not the car itself? Where actually is the car right now?

In Texas, it is my understanding that new registrants/residents must present both proof of inspection and proof of liability insurance at the county tax office when they register, thus the car must be there as well for the inspection.

There are some special rules for people not residing in Texas, but it appears that they are only applicable to students and military personnel.

ya it's a bit of a catch-22. Gotta live in a state to register the car... but if you don't actually live in any state....
