I'm a B permit holder, so all my taxes are deducted and paid by employer. Somehow, I've got 12 pages of tax declaration forms in my mailbox. I went to Tax office in Werdstrasse, but all they gave me is a handbook how to fill in these crazy forms and it's in German. So, my question is what would happen if I ignore tax declaration completely?

You'll get fined.

Would it be less than paying an accountant to fill in the form?

Depends. But you can get your taxes done by 300-500 CHF. Is it really worth to get a black stain on your tax record? This way you can also find someone who speaks English and explains to you future problems you might not understand.

It takes me less than an hour to do mine, but I don't own any property or such.

Most of the forms you won't need.

First time I needed to fill out a form, I just went to the local tax office, and a nice English speaking guy (I didn't speak Italian back then) helped me fill it out (for free).

Agree, actually filling in the form is the easy bit. Remembering where I put all the different papers with important stuff on them is much more time consuming.

Now I just have a box labelled "stuff that might be useful for filling in taxes" and drop anything in there that might vaguely be of relevance, and empty the box opnce a year when I'm doing my taxes. That's simplified the process significantly, so it was the first time was the worst for me.

I had this in Basel when i lived there. They told me to write on the front of the form that i had paid Quellensteuer and send it back with a copy of my "Lohnausweis" (years earnings and deductions)

I done this for 3 years and never heard anything back, you do not need to complete these forms as you are not entitled to any extra benefits, all your tax benefits are calculated within your Quellensteuer calculation and its a flat rate for everybody. It varies from kanton to kanton and is also dependent on how much you earn, but completing that form is a waste of your and their time

The fine is one thing, but if you fail to submit a tax declaration they will assess your taxes for you... in which case they will err on the side of caution (i.e. higher taxes)...

If the OP earns over 120K, then he or she is obliged to fill in the return. You can normally find someone to help you for ~100CHF.
