Re: How much more tax will double earners pay after getting married?

Hi!

For us the change was really high, especially on the Federal taxes, basically we paid double from one year to the next

If you go to the calculator of the commune where you live, you can easily do this calculation roughly.

Take you net salary (net after AHV, pension etc) and deduct roughly 10k for overall deductions (i.e. sickness, transport, etc). Do this for both of you as singles and then as married and see the difference. You net salary is typically found on your salary statement from your company at year end.

Obviously this is a very rough calculation but for ZH it works out ok to at least identify the difference.

Also, pls check rules in your kanton as some kantons will tax you as married already for whole year you get married in as they consider your status at 31/12, whilst some only start the year after.

Good luck

K

I got a pro-rated tax estimate for 2011 based on August to December. Do I need to fill out a tax return or can I just pay the amount that they sent me?

Well I expected more to be honest, so I am leery. I would rather not get a tax bill in 3 years with interest attached because they made a mistake.

However, I showed them my Lohnausweis and they basically did the tax calculation for me. Based on what I saw on comparis and what they charged me...i got a tax bill for less

Hi!

I am not sure how detailed and reliable comparis is, have you tried ur town's calculator?

In any case, if you are a tax declarer you will be able to fill in your tax declaration in a few months and immediately make another payment if you think you should. (You do not need to wait for final calculations).

Cheers,
K

Hi there,

We re planning to get married next year and have just realized as double earners we may end up paying much more taxes.

Has anyone any real idea if this is true, and if so by how much is the difference?

We are both taxed at source, and les say we re both earning for example 120k. I don't need exact numbers, but imagine today we pay 2000/month in taxes each, roughly how much more would we be likely to pay?

On the same note, could we merely get legally married in our home country and not declare it in here? Maybe hats ax evasion tho!

Thanks for any help
Wait a minute... didn't Geneva canton implement the split from last year ? That would mean counting both incomes, splitting in two and tax both on that average.
I am pretty sure friends of mine married not only for love last year in Geneva... wait for the confirmation, but the splitting rule came to my ear in that context.
