| | | What do you do with Your MONEY?
Hi
The title sounds stupid I know, but it got Your attention.
So, in view of the warnings about a bubble in the property market and warnings against off-shore investments (such as the ones offered by our beloved Beers and Chasers), banks paying almost no interest...
the question is: what to do with your money???

Actually I invest a lot in the Lac Leman property market. No bubble in my estimation, and it has already paid off handsomely.

I often withdraw it in its entirety, in 50.- notes. Spread them over the bed and roll around in them, naked, wearing a Santa Claus hat and a black jockstrap. Then I collect them all up and redeposit them. With interest.
Next question?

Buy motorcycles, and expensive presents for them.
What my wife does with my money is a different matter!

Ok, since the replies so far have been so helpful.
LET ME REPHRASE:
How do you invest that little money that you put aside with lots of years of hard work so that at the end (retirement or whatever) you have a nice return or at least the same buying value as when you invested it.

Best is to enjoy it while it's still worth more than the paper it's printed on!

The only way to make real money I figure is to actually invest it in something that you have a clue about yourself rather than expecting others to handle your cash with the same due care and attention. That's worked for me, I don't have any investment portfolios with banks, shares or bonds. Just certain property and various business outlets that generate income.
The well touted acumen of "The only way to earn money is have others earning it for you whilst you get on with even more profitable enterprises" pretty much sums up the sentiment, but only if you have complete total of the proceedings and as stated above, in an arena that you have an expertise.
Bear in mind not to forget about the "getting out" phase once you've established something successful. If you don't plan to pass on a business to a family member, you'll need to schmooze potential buyers years before you actually consider making your exit stage left.

He's counting on its continued rise, been doing it seriously since beginning '09 and has effectively doubled his money since then. I asked 'what if it tanks?' and he shrugged his shoulders; in his mind it's good to have the physical commodity in hand and he figures it will always go back up, which is probably true.

I count myself lucky and spend what I can carefully.
I suspect you're talking about money in bigger quantities than I can advise you on. It's kind of a nice problem yes?

It's just that the tanking is much more likely to happen during the lifetime of your friend than the going-back-up bit.
To the OP - if you think that every class of investments will do badly in the short to medium term future, you should invest your money in the well-being and the marketable skills of yourself and those that you call your own.

People have mutliple approaches. People with loads of Money give it to some Swiss / International money managers.
Smart people with relatively less money handle it themselves by investing it selectively into Stocks and commodities.
There are people who don't bother or want to actively track and play the market so they keep them in deposits.
I personally think in todays situation in Switzerland Deposits are ridiculous. Playing in stock is not advisable unless you think you are one of those smart people who can track and play it.
If you have loads of money couple of millions or above then give it to banks so that they can manage to earn the service fee which keeps the larger part of professional community employed.
I think selective long term buying in Commodity (Oil) and Precious metal is good but then not a guarantee. There are good companies out there with reasonable dividend yields and returns but could fall prey to market fluctuations.
Decide where you can go. Actually we could have a little monthly meet up to discuss markets and investment opportunities, though money manager not allowed.
