| | | Fake money, what to do
At the weekend we took a fake 50.- note over the bar which if compared to a real one looks totally different, different paper, slightly smaller no watermark, but when in a stressful situation would go unnoticed.
The bank confiscated it from me which is understandable and fair enough.
My question is what i should do in future if i get another.
I know that i should confiscate it and not give it back, but should i call the police immediately and report the person who passed it on?

You need to get one of thoses special money checking UV lights next to the till.
Get all staff into the habit of checking every note.
This process will not add any significant time to your serving.
And yes of course inform the police if it happens again.
cheers

I would say take the note off him and tell him to pay with real money...

I would say: sorry this is a fake. Give me a real one.
Maybe the person knows it, maybe not. Would you have like it to be reported to the police by the bank? I would mortified like the majority of us.
I accounted many fakes in my restaurants/ bars work in the past, from very genuine people who had no idea.

Since the bill passed without being notice in your bar, if the person knew it and have more, he may try it again. If you do find out, I think you should contact the police. But this is assuming it is the same person.

It only happened to me once.........i was 13 . It was a horrible feeling.
My dad had given me a £20 note and on my way to school i bought some munchies from a petrol station. The guy behind the till told me it was fake and took my details (name&address).
Then the next day the police came to my house and asked me where i got the money. Then they asked my dad where he got it. They traced the money back to a pub........which they ended up busting, as the pub themselves were giving dodgy money to most of their customers.
Several weeks later the policeman gave me £20 out of his own pocket for helping cracking the case and also i got a mention in the local newspaper.
cheers

I think you're only real option is to report the matter to the police..... I find it odd that the Bank didn't do this as well
(given that forgery immediately affects their business, let alone break the law)
I would imagine if the guy gets away with it once, he'll try it again. I don't think he would try more than a few times though, so the window of opportunity to catch him will be slight.
------------------
I remember when Australia switched to the plastic notes instead of the paper notes.
On the first day I had a $10 note in my hand, I had to buy some bait to go fishing.
The shop owner was furious and sent me out of the shop..... but I was yelling back at him that it wasn't fake.
One of the other customers came to my rescue and convinced the bloke the note was legit, so I ended up getting my bait.
......didn't catch any fish though.

I would hand it in to the police. There might be several instances of people trying to pay with counterfeit money in the area, and you might help the police catch those people.
I guess you could also contact the Swiss Counterfeit Currency Central Office http://www.fedpol.admin.ch/content/f...ralstelle.html | | This user would like to thank kswiss for this useful post: | |

Don't have any advice for you Tony, but you made me think of an article I read a couple years ago about a very successful counterfeiter in the U.S. He experimented for months and months to find a paper that would pass the marker test, finally found a mix of newspaper, 'regular' paper, and linen that did it. Took the imbedded strips from lower value bills and was able to incorporate them in his fakes. It was a long and fascinating writeup on the guy with lots of details about his process... which I think is why I can't find the article anymore . The bills were so good the way he got caught was by getting lazy with changing the serial numbers.

I've got to say that in my five years here this is the first time of heard of a duff note in the wild.
I was always sure there were duff notes here, but given that the vast majority of places take high value notes without any complaint whatsoever, I always considered that there wasn't really a problem with forgeries as such.
