Telecommuting from US while residing in CH

My wife (from France) will be taking a position in Zurich. I hope to be able to keep my current job. We both live in the US currently, but will (obviously) move to Zurich soon.

With respect to paying income taxes...how does telecommuting from the US get taxed? I looked through the various search results and I could not find an example like mine.

Does anyone have a clue? Will i have to pay taxes to both countries?

thank you kindly

You will be working and residing in Zurich, regardless of where your company is based. Thus, you pay Swiss taxes.

Additionally, since uncle Sam retains the right to scr*w his citizens abroad, you will be required to file a US tax return as well. If you make more than a certain amount of money (searchable) you will also have to pay taxes to the US.

Yes, if resident here, subject to swiss tax. If US citizen or green card holder, also subject to US taxes. Bilateral tax agreements may soften the blow, but you will likely at a minimum be subject to filing in both places.

If you are a contractor or a normal employee, your company will send
a 1099 or W-2 respectively. With a W-2, they will withhold your taxes
as normal. To get a refund, you will have to file a US tax return.

You can fill out a w4, I think it is, to adjust the amount of us tax withheld. But certain taxes like social security, Medicare, whatever they call those taxes are withheld. If you get a 1099, you won't have them withheld, but will adjust for them when you file in the US.

Re: Telecommuting from US while residing in CH

ok...As i understand so far:

The company I work for does not operate in Switzerland at all. I will have to pay taxes to Switzerland because I reside there...but I will also have to pay payroll taxes in the US because my company operates there.

Do I have this wrong?

And with a 1099 you'll need to make quarterly payments in the US.
