You might regret that if you're heading for a remote island. After Hugo blew through St. Croix, TP was very valuable stuff. If you've ever had to wipe with anything you can find, particularly after the island was denuded, you'll understand.

Oh, no. I'm staying in Europe. If the whole thing explodes* the US is the last place I'd go. But I take your point. I'm buying a horse & learning to sail. Signing up for class right now.

*I'm taking from spalebärg's post and talking the WHOLE thing exploding, not just the Euro.

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

Saw an article in Tagesanzeiger yesterday (a rehash of an interview ex-SNB chief Hildebrand gave to another newspaper).
At the end, they posted the rumor that the new Greek Drachma is already being printed (in the Netherlands). The introduction will come on a Sunday, with banks being closed till Wednesday then.
If you google around, a similar rumor appeared towards the beginning of June (from German reputable paper "Rheinische Post") - though they pinned the printing operations to GB (de la Rue). They also claimed to have spoken to a source working at a company delivering the paper for the Drachma and the same source seems to have seen the banknotes with his own eyes.
Related to that is the appearance of a "Drachma" currency symbol on the Bloomberg ticker (that was quickly withdrawn, of course).

Can I bet on a date somewhere? ;-)
Because, AFAIK, you can't really bet on the "if" anymore.
I'm sure, our beloved Angela Merkel will find some warm words for it, like "With Every End There's a New Beginning".

Spain downgraded by Fitch from A to BBB.

Who was it who described the eurozone as a slow motio train crash?
To be fair, a train crash is over in seconds. This wreck has taken the best part of a decade and still has some way to go...

In spite of the rumors, it's really difficult to see how Greece would survive an exit back to the drachma. If there'd be a date, though, I'd bet it would be soon after the upcoming election. Interesting times....

Seeing how they barely survive with the EURO: people only get medicines for on-the-spot cash-payments, the national energy grid on the brink of shutting down because of a cascade of unpaid bills... the list goes on.

Of course, it's going to be even worse once they actually stop paying back those bonds and the EU stops pumping money into this bottomless hole (which, now that most big banks got their asses covered) will be rather sooner than later).

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

Hi,
I think it's quite related to the euro crash...

Someone said to "have the real price of gold, one needs to multiply the current market rate by 10."

It looks like something to do with the printing of many notes, and all that.

Can someone shed some lights?

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

So Greece will be kicked out of euro zone. That doesn't mean the end of euro, though.
Euro zone will be most probably left with the countries that could actually keep up with Stability Pact s requirments.

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

The Times reported today that Greece is fairly miffed that Spain got a €100zillion bail out without having to cut anything. Apparently Spain's bank's bail out was rushed through as all hell is expected to break loose after next weekend's Greek vote, where austerity is expected to be firmly rejected.

Let those presses roll...

It's stuff like this that makes me wonder if anyone, ANYONE, in a position of influence in this crisis has the ability to stop the inevitable meltdown at this point. All the bickering and such...jesus, the entire world economy is about to crap itself and nobody seems to be dealing with a full deck. May the force be with us..all.

I think it's obvious why...
Because they have protected their assets, or are planning to make massive profit from it, by being in the "danger zone" a bit.

For example, they could invest shortly after the crash and that many people/company have bankrupted or are desperate enough to sell their assets (home, goods, shares, etc...) for a penny...erm a rappen.

I don't think i'm feeding the "crash scenario" but what I mentioned above would be quite a clever move... Maybe a bit risky but if you can make a massive profits afterwards...

Ah, yes - let's gag free speech. Sadly, poptart is right. The vested interests of the EU find negative, if realistic, comment irritating too.

Another Times leader today likens the euro crisis to Alice in Wonderland where the euro disappears down a hole into a magical kingdom where reality and logic no longer exist.

I feel we are witnessing in slow motion the biggest financial disaster of the last 50 years...

All this doom and gloom. Look on the bright side -- it's a fantastic time to buy shares in De La Rue.

About "Greece is fairly miffed".... Seems like a ploy to convince the Greeks not to vote for austerity - if the Spanish can do it then so can we, etc., etc.

Nutty beaurocrats at work
