Re: How long does the Euro have left?

Both "rescue" funds downgraded, no surprise. How can you give these funds a AAA Rating when nearly all countries behind these funds are not AAA rated.

Quote from BBC world news
"Moody's has cut the triple-A rating of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) euro rescue fund by one notch and given it a negative outlook.

It follows a downgrade earlier this month of key ESM-backer France.

Moody's also cut rating of the mechanism's predecessor, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF)"

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

Forecast today by Saxo bank that the euro will fall to 95 Rappen in 2013; I have no clue how good that forecast is.

Must admit this comes from their "Saxo Bank's Outrageous Predictions 2013" web site

The predictions certainly make for interesting reading.

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

According to the Telegraph's Ambrose Evans-Pritchard Switzerland and Britain are now in a currency war to drive down their respective currencies.

Quote:
It seems you can’t debase your coinage these days even if you try.

The Bank of England is straining every sinew to drive down sterling with quantitative easing, and what happens?

The Swiss National Bank trumps Threadneedle Street with an outright blitz of Gilt purchases. They just print it, and buy.

The Swiss and UK central banks are effectively fighting a "low intensity" currency war against each other.

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

On the news last night some government official (sorry, didn't catch who) stated that the CHF will remain floor-pegged to the Euro at 1.20 for the next 5 years. Of course if the Euro rises above that, no problem. So I would say the Euro isn't going anywhere any time soon.

A great example of the law of "unintended side effects"

The issue for our lovely SNB is what do they do with all this euro crap that they bought at extra high prices.
It was rumoured they were quietly selling off their euro investments for CHF on quiet days when the sun was shining on the euro but this seems doubtful. I assume we will see the SNB end of year numbers soon so we will have a better view.

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

Interesting early Italian vote results are interesting.

Mr Monti who was the last PM & led the drive for Italy to economise seems to have come a bad 4th.

The anti - politician party led by a comedian seems to have won double the number of seats won by Mr Monti.

And our old friend the party giver seems to have won more Senate seats than any other party.

It will all end in tears

A Portugese court declared today that some of their budget austerity measures are illegal so will have to be reversed. Consequently it looks like the Portugese Govt. will shortly be in Brussels with their begging bowl

Holland is not looking good at present although it was fairly low on this list.

It has been officially in recession for two years. In the same 2 years unemployment rate has doubled to 8.1%. The ratio of household debt to disposable income peaked at 266pc in 2010, the highest in EMU and almost a world record.
A quarter of all mortgages “under water”, means the current house sale price is less than the mortgage.

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

ECB cut their main interest rate today by quarter percent as widely forecast.
According to the UBS Quotes site there was little reaction in the Swiss market today; 3 month LIBOR dropped from 0.02 to 0.12.
CHF exchange rates have not changed & no reaction yet in the fixed term Swiss mortgage market.

Interesting news!

A draft European legislation approved Monday by a committee of the European Parliament states that the savings of small depositors will be protected up to 100,000 euros, while the holders of accounts with higher balances will risk having to spend losses bank failures.

(approved Monday 20th May 2013, so two days ago).

They're creating the law to reproduce what happened in Cyprus legally anywhere in Europe...

The ship is sinking fast!

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

From the Telegraph
"Mediobanca, Italy’s second biggest bank, said its “index of solvency risk” for Italy was already flashing warning signs (for Italy) as the worldwide bond rout continued into a second week, pushing up borrowing costs.

“Time is running out fast,” said Mediobanca’s top analyst, Antonio Guglielmi, in a confidential client note. “The Italian macro situation has not improved over the last quarter, rather the contrary. Some 160 large corporates in Italy are now in special crisis administration.”

The report warned that Italy will “inevitably end up in an EU bail-out request” over the next six months, unless it can count on low borrowing costs and a broader recovery. "

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

More on Italy from today's newspapers led by the FT
"Italy is reportedly facing losses of around €8bn on controversial derivative contracts taken out in the late 1990s, and restructured at the height of the eurozone crisis.
The elephant in the room is the way Italy, like Greece, used complex methods improve its finances in the years before joining the single currency.

Italy give its finances quite a polish in the late 1990s, bringing its deficit down from over 6% in 1996 to below 3% in 1997, qualifying for euro membership."

Re: How long does the Euro have left?

& France

"France's national auditor has warned the country has little chance of meeting its revised budget targets this year and will need to make a big effort to cut public spending to meet a new deadline of 2015 set by Brussels for bringing the deficit below 3 per cent of output,

They said: "France is hardly halfway towards budgetary consolidation begun in 2011 and the easing of the timetable, justified by economic slowdown, does not allow for any relaxation."
