Tax Deduction - German Classes

Hi there!

Anyone knows if there are any tax deductions for taking german classes in Bern?

I´m from Portugal and there we can deduct education expenses in the taxes. Here it works the same or not?

Thanks!

Yes. (Provided you complete a tax form and are not taxed at source.)

If you need german as professional education for your job then yes.

In that case it should not matter if you are taxed at source as this is considered self education. This does assume your employer is not paying for it.

My accountant has confirmed this a number of times

In canton Zurich any further education with set limits is deductible. If one is taxed at source it is possible that no tax form is completed, thus it cannot be deducted...

Incidentally, even if you do submit a tax declaration but earn under 120k, then the Gemeinde can refuse to process it (because you do not go over 120k).

KPMG warned me about that for my Gemeinde; fingers crossed hoping to get a few thousand back.
