Swiss Bank Charges - if you become a UK resident - Beware!

Has anyone else experienced problems with 'domicile abroad' charges being taken out of their Swiss bank savings account for most of 2011 and only finding this out in their annual statement? I use the account very little as I am now resident in UK and have had 275chf taken out of the account with no warning!!

No, not at all. I'm with Postfinance, and have had nothing extra taken out due to living in the UK now.

I thought they were only doing this to US account holders (because they effectively have to act as tax inspectors for the IRS and they pass on the costs to the clients). Suggest you look through the T&Cs to make sure they haven't made a mistake. Otherwise maybe time to switch banks?

Re: Swiss Bank Charges - if you become a UK resident - Beware!

I had an account at credit suisse bank when I had lived in Berlin (2007). The bank charges 25 CHF per month.. This year I relocated to Frankfurt without notice to the bank..of course they got the charges very naturally and automatically....

Quite possibly, but I had no way of knowing what bank you were using.

There's another thread on this somewhere here, do a search for more.

No, at least not Postfinance. I'm a US citizen and PF know it, but no extra fees - regardless of where I've been living (Switzerland or the UK).

Re: Swiss Bank Charges - if you become a UK resident - Beware!

Thanks for your input, catandmouse. Over the period from April 2011 until they send out the account statement in Jan 2012, they have taken 275CHF = £161 and then closed my account!! I wondered if it was the US tax causing the issue but when I spoke to the bank manager at the branch my account is (umm, WAS) lodged and said I was in UK, he was very unhelpful and just kept saying they had the right to take the charges and refused to refund them to me. Will defo' be going to the Ombudsman about it.
