Taxes for Expats - tax preparation for US citizens abroad

Taxes for Expats is a tax preparation firm specializing on American citizens living abroad.

They have over 20 years experience preparing taxes for US expatriates.

This focus enables them to provide best in class service at prices that are significantly lower than the competition - i.e. a flat fee of $349 USD for Federal Tax Return if your income is below $100,000 and $449 if it's above.

They offer the same level of service online that you would receive by visiting the office - without having to leave your house.

Their web site is one of the best resource for US expat tax information - explaining all the rules and regulations that apply to you.

Visit www.taxesforexpats.com to learn more.

Re: Taxes for Expats - tax preparation for US citizens abroad

Slightly misleading for anyone on here who earns anything above the magical CHF120'000 mark... You get hit with a double-whammy for being a high-income earner:

Quote:
Federal Tax Return: $349
if Gross Income Exceeds $100,000: $449
Swiss Income Over $100,000: $100 + Base Price

Re: Taxes for Expats - tax preparation for US citizens abroad

Forgive me for living up to my screen name, but I'm still not clear on the fees.

If I am a US taxpayer in Switzerland earning more than $100k, do I pay:

($349 (Base fee) + $100 (Base supplement for over $100k)) + $100 (Swiss over $100k) = $549

or do I pay:

$349 (Base fee without supplement) + $100 (Swiss over $100k) = $449

Re: Taxes for Expats - tax preparation for US citizens abroad

No problem at all - the answer is $549.

We even took the trouble and converted everything to CHF:

Quote:
A flat fee of 333 CHF for personal tax return if your income is below 100,000 CHF and 525 CHF if it's above, all forms included.

Sorry, I don't particularly want to pay taxes for being an expat. I pay enough to the CH government.

Re: Taxes for Expats - tax preparation for US citizens abroad

Incredibly cheap

Not sure how it is financially viable given all the additional reporting and foreign issues on US taxpayers.

Curious as to how you would treat Pillar 3 accounts invested in foreign (PFICS), FBAR and FFAR reporting, etc and with the new changes to Pillar 2 accounts meaning PFIC implications there, how is it possible to keep costs so low?

OR are we offering a basic prep here?

FBAR reporting is priced separately:

http://www.taxesforexpats.com/services/our-fees.html

With the various bank accounts I hold scattered around the world, my FBAR would cost nearly as much as my tax return!

But nowhere near as much as the penalties for non compliance

Re: Taxes for Expats - tax preparation for US citizens abroad

We listened to the feedback from our Swiss clients and have removed the $100 charge for Swiss income over $100k. Now the price for Federal Tax return is only $349 if income < 100k and $449 if it's above $100k.

Re: Taxes for Expats - tax preparation for US citizens abroad

Hi there! Can anybody recommend a tax advisor in Switzerland for US taxes? I have been living here for 15 years and have not filed in the last 3. Fear is a powerful emotion. I would like to file for the past 3 years and do it right. I am over the exclusion salary but not by a lot.

Thanks in advance

I seen to think their prices are extremely high, well that's considering I never made more than 13,000 in any year here, the price bases on more or less than 100,000 is too high what about people under 50,000 ? that 349 is too much for us..

Re: Taxes for Expats - tax preparation for US citizens abroad

Started to use their site. Seems like you have to fill out the form. And then you can also upload documents. However any document you upload, like your swiss tax returns, you have to have it all translated. If you want them to just take your docs and fill everything out for you, they charge like an extra 200 USD an hour. Don't know how many hours they would take to do this.

So you are paying for the service of filling out your own form and you have to pay extra to translate your supporting documents. I have sent them an email to see if my understanding is correct.

For my swiss taxes, I give all the paperwork (in four different languages)to my tax guy, he fills out everything and just sends it back to me to sign, with a stamped envelope and everything ready to send off. All this for half the price of what this site is charging not including the extra service of filling out forms for you. For once something in Switzerland which is cheaper than in the USA!

Finally got through all 12 pages on tax returns on the forum and found someone who has used this site and thought it was great...
also found more recent recomendations of other people who do this sort of service which I am checking their services against this one.

if you earn less than 50,000 and have lived the full year outside the US it is very easy to use Turbo Tax. Download to you computer and make your own tax return. Cost 80 dollars last year from memory. Took about 1/2 hour to do a simple tax return for a friend. I don't know if it covers all these new bank account reporting requirements though.

Re: Taxes for Expats - tax preparation for US citizens abroad

I got an answer form the taxes for expats people pretty quickly. They wouldn't need the whole tax returns, eventually they might need some supporting documetns but hard to say which ones until they actually start processing. so not as many documents to be translated after all.

Hi JBZ, can I ask you to elaborate a bit on this? What new changes to 2nd pillar are creating PFIC implications? Thanks!
