i know this question has been asked in some form but after going though the forum no one has quite hit the nail on the head for me.

I need a laptop (not a Swiss or German one) and i've seen one on-line from the UK , i was wondering first, do i get import tax on delivery? and since my computer is about £1100 what kinda figure will this be?

Yes, you will be charged import duty of 8%, plus handling fees.

Remember that you should be able to reclaim the 20% UK VAT, though, if you are not a UK resident.

Thank you so much, i actually went to that website and searched but couldn't find it. One more question- do you know exactly how i claim this back? directly form the shop? or submit something to a Uk embassy somewhere

If they are any good, they'll deduct the 20% from the price.
You will have to pay an invoice from the courier that will include the 8% MwST.

if its a good shop they will deduct the tax straight away, if they are a crap shop they will start talking abut global tax refund etc... which is not possible as it will be mail order.

I just bought an Acer Travelmate (yes, I know they're cheap and cheerful, but of all the laptops I've had in the past ten years or so, they've been the most reliable) from Steg Computers in Basel, that had choice of German/Italian/French or English for the OS. All you have to get used to is the Z and Y keys being swapped on the keyboard.

Manuals aren't a problem as you can download English versions from the manufacturers website. You might find that ordering for CH works out cheaper than the UK, once you've added shipping and customs admin fee. Not all, however, ship with English as the option for OS.

You can order a Dell laptop with a UK keyboard, from CH.

Same for Apple.

When living in France I used to order internationl (English) keyboard + English OS; before Apple, I got the same though through Dell (again, internationall keyboard + English OS).
