USD Money Order to CH

Ugh, I need help.

My "Oh-So-Meaning-Well" Father sent my family a Money Order from his American Bank. He failed to realize the problem with cashing this in Switzerland.

Does anyone have a suggestion for me as to how to receive the funds (totaling 300 USD)? Or should I just send it back?

I have informed him for future cash donations a direct deposit into my Credit Suisse account would be far more helpful.

Thank you for all answers and suggestions.

Re: USD Money Order...

Western Union Money Transfer, Paypal are but 2 possibly viable options.

Maybe Xoom still does the low cost transfer option from the US to CH.

Quote:
Xoom.com offers a significantly lower fee of $4.99 to transfer any amount, up to $2,999, to Europe. Receiving banks do not charge a fee when money is sent using Xoom.com.

Xoom.com offers money transfer services to other European countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Re: USD Money Order...

When I am sent cash from the U.S., it is put into my paypal account and then you transfer it into your Swiss account. There is a small fee (of course), but I have heard its cheaper than Western Union.

Re: USD Money Order to CH

Thank you for these suggestions. My issue at the moment remains that I still have a 300 USD Money Order (he paid his bank and they wrote a check in my name for the amount) that I need to cash somewhere in Switzerland.

Is this money order cashable?

Thank you.

Thank you jrspet. That did provide a bit more insight into my situation. I will go to my local bank and have a check with what they can do. I appreciate your post and everyone else who responded.

Re: USD Money Order to CH

Make sure to go to the main branch for your bank, even if it means you've got to travel a bit. If your own bank won't do it, you might want to give one of the big commercial banks a try, or even one of the cantonal banks - even if you don't have an account there. They may accept it, or at least be able to tell you how to cash it.
