Move residence to Switzerland while not in Switzerland

Hello, I have dual citizenship (Canada and Swiss) and been working in Canada for the last 20 years. Few weeks ago, I have been offered a position in a Swiss company. In this position, I will be working 90% of my time outside Switzerland.
Now, according to HR person, I need to change my residence from Canada to Switzerland????? This would make sense if I was working in Switzerland but since I'm not, what difference does it make to them. Is she correct?

Also being in Switzerland only 10% of my time, am I going to pay income tax in Switzerland.

Many thanks for any advice!

You do know that Swiss taxes are generally much lower than Canadian ones, yes?

Re: Move residence to Switzerland while not in Switzerland

Yes, I realized that I would pay less taxes in Switzerland. But, since my family is still in Canada, I have no chance to become non resident in Canada and I will still pay income tax in Canada as well. So the main issue is still whether or not I need to change my residency to Switzerland when I will work 90% of the time outside Switzerland.

Re: Move residence to Switzerland while not in Switzerland

Maybe the company wants to pay you in Swiss Francs and its easier for them to deal with paying you as a Swiss resident.

Having to pay you as a Canadian if you would be the only Canadian probably becomes an issue for them having to forward Canadian taxes to the Canadian govt, social security, employment taxes etc etc. Which they may have no experience or knowledge of what to do.

This might be the reason.

You may not have to pay taxes in Canada, and in any case would not likely be double taxed. There is a Swiss-Canada double taxation treaty which deals with this, it seems you could only be considered resident for tax purposes in one or ther other country. http://www.fin.gc.ca/treaties-conven...force--eng.asp
