Re: Cantonal Tax Offices

Thanks - this stuff seems to come naturally to the hubby. I need a bit of reading material to get my head around it.

Re: Cantonal Tax Offices

Thanks very much Richard! I hate to be picky, but I think making the following changes might be helpful for the non-Germanophones:

Freiburg -> Fribourg/Freiburg

Genf -> Genève

Neuenburg -> Neuchâtel

Tessin -> Ticino

Waadt -> Vaud

Wallis -> Valais/Wallis

Re: Cantonal Tax Offices

Thanks Richard! However, I have to agree with Heather because I was amazed to not see Vaud included in your list. I used the search function to make sure I had not been blind, and fortunately that directed me to Heather's post. I'd almost forgotten that the German's call it Waadt. I believe the official English term is also Vaud.

Re: Cantonal Tax Offices

Can i ask a (probably) very stupid question? Other than tax at source (which I pay) is there a further "Canton Tax" to pay, similar to UK council tax?

A colleague, who is also English, recently told me that he had heard of a canton tax which we will be notified about in June time, and would have to pay to the canton over three installments?

Does anyone have the foggiest what this is, how much it costs etc. We live in Oerlikon.

Thanks.

Not sure how it works in Canton ZH, but I'm pretty sure if you're taxed at source, that's it. How it used to be for me here in AG.

You can generally pay in installments, if you ask.

Ring and ask/tell the tax office, and because this is Switzerland, note that you will have to fill out a form and sign it :-)

Re: Cantonal Tax Offices

Phew thanks for that.
When in doubt it is always good to call up.

It is never good to have a suprise bill in the mail though.... I wonder if ever someone has had one where the tax office pays someone back instead. Now that would be nice

Re: Cantonal Tax Offices

So is the general opinion that this is probably already being taxed at source? Or is there definitely a separate thing?

If you're taxed at source there is nothing else to pay.

I can't speak for ZH, but in AG I have been taxed at source and now I file.

When I was taxed at source that was it. No more tax bills. When I file I get 2 bills, one is the large one (in advance here in AG) which is combination of Canton and Community (Gemeinde). Then comes the smaller one after the year has ended, for Federal Tax.

I can't speak for for ZH but I am 99% sure your colleague is wrong.

As mentioned in another thread, I live in Zürich and I pay Quellensteuer. I am facing an additional tax bill though.
