Getting Cornercard or another prepaid credit card

I was just reading an old post from a few years back by someone saying they were able to get a Cornercard credit card without having to show their residence permit. Has anyone gotten a prepaid credit card recently and can share their experience?

Until I get my permit (will take at least another few weeks) nobody will open an account for me and I'm stuck carrying out wads of cash and paying every by cash, so would love to get a credit card - even if just a prepaid one - ASAP.

But how do you reload prepaids? Do you need a Swiss bank account to transfer the money over, which would render the whole exercise pointless?? Or is there some way to pay cash into it?

Perhaps something like the Travel Cash card, I've no experience of it, but it seems you can get it at the train station... I expect it will not be a cheap option and I assume you'll have to wait for a PIN number etc...

I just saw on the benefits page that there are no forms to fill out..., but the fee is 1% of the amount loaded!

Re: Getting Cornercard or another prepaid credit card

39 francs at a Kiosk for the Cornercard one. I think you then have to use payment slips to load the card before using it.

I'm with Corner and just about to link a disposable/prepay card into my account. That way I can load it instantly without the wait that you'll have.....and use it in situations where the address verification presents an issue to me

Re: Getting Cornercard or another prepaid credit card

An update on the Cornercard prepaid MasterCard (the non-contact version).

It seems that it is now sold exclusively via Naville and Relay stores.
  • Initial cost is CHF 39 (like the annual fee).
  • The cost to recharge the card is 4% (min CHF 2)
  • Acts like a credit card. Accepted in CH and outside of CH
  • You can put a maximum of CHF 2'500 per annum through the card. My guess is this limit is set with the Finma. If you want more, you need to apply for a nominative prepaid card.
  • The limit can be checked at any time via an SMS system (like for a prepaid phone)
  • The card can be blocked/unblocked via SMS.

It needs to be activated via the Internet (also via smart phone-web). You will need a mobile phone so a code can be sent when activating the card.

More details in-store (they have a flyer) or on the website. http://www.naville.ch/

Re: Getting Cornercard or another prepaid credit card

The limit is due to anti-money laundering controls.
