Re: Does it now (2013) make sense to open a third pillar 3a account?

I'll just add this question to this post...:

Does anyone know how long it takes to receive a tax refund from the pillar 3a (or for any other reason for that matter)?

I'm in Neuchatel.

Thanks.

That is a good question, Enohzee. I have asked that myself today in Canton Bern. They say it varies. From talks with friends, I heard that it may take up to a year! A friend of mine got his refund for year X before X-1! In such a case, a call may be needed to address the issue. The best is to call the cantonal authorities and ask directly.

I'm still waiting on tax refunds (BL) from 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013!

Re: Does it now (2013) make sense to open a third pillar 3a account?

IMPORTANT

When you asking for your tax back (considering you got taxed to the source every month) for the 3rd pillar account, you must do it EVERY year, before March 31st.

I just contacted "Zürich Cantonal Tax Office": you CANNOT get the tax (money) back from a previous year past this date.

For example: in March 2015 you can claim your taxes back for the year 2014, but not for 2013, nor 2012 nor any previous year - and from April 2015, you cannot claim anymore for 2014.

My final advice on this topic: EnglishForum is great, you will get tones of good tips, but you should always double check the information provided as I have read a lot of false information on this very website too.

In this case, you can contact (phone, email or face-to-face):

Re: Does it now (2013) make sense to open a third pillar 3a account?

The following is valid in canton Bern and it relates to information I have dealt with first hand. Other cantons may vary.

I also heard about the rumour that once you file in your tax declaration while being taxed at source, you are obliged to do it every year. I called the Steuerverwaltung Bern and they denied it. You can choose every year if you want to do it or not, as long as you are taxed at source (quellensteuert).

The deadline is March 31st for tax declarations for non-taxed at source. You can ask for a free extension once, and pay for a second. For taxed at source though, all you need to send before end of March is a form (Antrag nachtraglich ordentliche Veranlagung) that requests that they send you the documents to file in your declaration, giving a reason (typically a contribution to a third pillar account or the birth of a child). You need to do this every year that you want to file in your declaration while being taxed at source. If you don't do it, then there will be no further adjustments regarding your tax contribution in the previous year (you lost the chance).

Watch out because once you send the form, then you are obliged to file in your declaration. Therefore it is highly advisable that you download previously the taxme offline app to do the calculations and only proceed to send the form if it is to your benefit.

A time after you send in the form you get the documents to fill on paper, and you have until June to do that, but since you should have done your calculations in the taxme offline app anyways, you can just discard the paper documents and just print your version and send it right back. Note that as long as you are taxed at source you cannot follow the process online (taxme online).

Hope that helps.
