I would say that applies to pretty much all of London nowadays.

It's a question of lifestyle really.

If sailing the Mediteranean on your super yacht is your goal, then you will need more money than someone who is happy going fishing with their tinnie.

.... I am in the fishing tinnie department.
We are pretty simple people, content with a simple life, had planned a simple retirement pottering around our garden.

Have you seen the price of a Swiss garden?

Re: Do you ever think that you get paid too much?

There is a distortion caused by the economic climate.

If you were paid 120K CHF six years ago then that would have been the equivalent of 50K because the exchange rate was 2.4

Today, 120k CHF seems to be 80K because the exchange rate is 1.5

The only thing that has changed is the exchange rate. Salary and cost of living in Switzerland is still the same.

A friend of mine who moved here from Germany remarked how he finds the wages here for IT are unbelievably high and he struggled to get his head around it.

Do you ever think that you get paid too much? Can you get paid too much?

At what limit would you say, "OK, I have enough money now. I'm going to quit and retire?"
Has he gotten any batch of monthly bills yet? I think it is just too early for him to celebrate.

And why is the exchange rate to the GBP even relevant.

Screw that, try getting along on earning under 1000 and before yall go scale of economics on me, things are not as cheap here as they seem at first glance.
For instance, its gonna cost 37.137,00 (and that is not a typo) to get Iron Pig registered and running on Maltese plates and the for instances can go on and on an on.

120K CHF was 75K six years ago and is 100K today.

But my point is still the same.

What do you mean- the price of a Swiss garden? Depends where, surely. And there are many events around for plant swaps- which is brilliant
My garden costs me .... just a bit of elbow grease and time... and a bit of begging from neighbours and friends

Wallabies, good comment- however the to CHF exchange rate is VERY important to us- as we are retirees from the UK... People from the UK, unless you return regularly may not be aware of how prices ahve gone up in UK recently. As FMF says, a Pizza is more 12- and in Covent Garden more like 20. Regional difference in prices are as marked in the UK as here btw.
At PizzaFun, our local pizzeria here, the cheapest 29cm pizza is CHFD14.50 and the most expensive CHF18.50- and they are really good- and I'd say price very competitive compared to UK. The huge family size 45cm is CHF41 for 3 to 4 people.

The UK is like disneyland! A cheap playland compared to CH and my original country its amazing how cheap it is and the look of horror on UK visitors in Australia hen they discover most things are a numer of times more expensive then the UK. But then the minimum legal salary in Australia is now about 2 times that of the UK

Swiss gardens? Old fashioned houses have big gardens, the new garden apartments/one family homes have about as much space as our patio! I`d absolutely hate having to greet neighbors everytime I poked my nose out the front door! And in the back I only have the other neighbors Llamas staring at me (Do they REALY spit? I never get too close to them!)

Pizzas? well, we`re guilty of sneaking the 3kms over the border for a German pizza for about 5 - 6 Euros (with lashings of fillings - delicious). Here they cost from Sfr18 upwards! And beer there is only a couple Euros, compared to Sfr5,40 (restaurant prices)

Re: Do you ever think that you get paid too much?

But you can choose to go and rent an old house with a garden, or buy one... you just have to choose your location carefully to get the right price. You won't find it in Zurich or Geneva, that is true. I know 1000s of people in the UK who commute 1 hour and more to be able to have a larger house with garden. It's a choice many can make- even if it means not having that posh kitchen or bathrooms - but we digress- back to OP.

I like having a decent income and seeing something for my work. What I especially like, is being content with my lot.
The story of the fisherman - heard it?

Tourist comes across fisherman lazing in sun on beach - his craft pulled up on sand next to him.
"Why you not out fishing?" asks tourist
"Done that this morning, finished now" says fisherman.
"But if you fished this afternoon you could catch more fish and earn more" says tourist.

"And then what?" asks fisherman
"Then you could buy another boat and catch even more fish" says tourist
"And then what?" says fisherman
"You could then own more boats, fish more, and earn more" says tourist.
"And then what?" says fisherman
"Then you could hire men to fish, and lie on the beach in the sun and relax" says tourist
"What you think I`m doing now?" says fisherman.

Its all about being content with one`s lot.

Central London property is way more expensive than property here, has been for many years.

Not in Zug.

Currently on home gate.ch the cheapest place you can buy in Zug is 410k. Thats the lowest i have seen in 2 years. After that there is only a handful of places under 800k.

Thats really cheap verses central London. I know someone with an ordinary 2 bed flat in South London (Zone 3), hardly a first choice location unlike Zug, just been valued at 700,000.
