Do you ever think that you get paid too much?

A friend of mine who moved here from Germany remarked how he finds the wages here for IT are unbelievably high and he struggled to get his head around it.

Do you ever think that you get paid too much? Can you get paid too much?

At what limit would you say, "OK, I have enough money now. I'm going to quit and retire?"

Not when I look at property price and mortgage repayments.

My bank certainly doesn't think I earn enough

Your first paragraph ...... that is the problem in CH. Wages are low in Germany, same as house prices, rentals, food, clothing, appliances, etc.
So they come here to work, and take the money back there.
The workers move in, and the money moves out.

So I guess those people do think they`re getting paid a very nice salary, compared to their home country. (That`s also why such an increase in traffic on Swiss roads).

Does anyone ever have "enough" money?

It's a question of lifestyle really.

If sailing the Mediteranean on your super yacht is your goal, then you will need more money than someone who is happy going fishing with their tinnie.

.... I am in the fishing tinnie department.

Sadly, my views on wealth have never changed, but the goal posts are constantly being moved.

The amount of money I needed to retire when I was 18 has increased about 5 times.
From what was a simple realistic goal, has now become much more of a challenge.

Excluding unforeseen events that have taken place in my life, I'd probably be a lot closer to my goal..... but hey, shit happens.

Tony Robbins said people earn exactly what they think they are worth and not a penny more, I agree with that!

You get paid too much if you have more than 5 posts per day on EF on average and still earn the EF average salary of CHF120k

Maybe the pay * daily average post rate should be the most pertinent swiss job metric

Re: Do you ever think that you get paid too much?

I have a friend here who constantly compares the price of everything in CH to the prices in the UK and complains about the cost of nearly everything.

I stopped doing that about 1 year after I came here and decided I would just buy the same stuff I used to buy in the UK and not convert the price back to UK pounds.

It actually makes me pretty angry because he is working here in IT earning 2 or 3 times the salary he ever could in the UK but has a big problem paying 20 CHF for a pizza in a restaurant because he can get the same pizza for £6 in the UK.

id stop hanging out with him, because it is tiresome. its the massively pointless and a waste of nerves to complain over a thing you cant change. take it or leave it. i have stopped 3 months after i came here to calculate back n forth... i take it. fin.

I just looked at Pizza Express menu, many pizzas in the £12 range, thats not far from 20 CHF at todays rates. http://www.pizzaexpress.com/uploads/...xpress_mnu.pdf
Well, if your friend had been here 5/6 years ago he would have found many things cheaper here with an exchange rate of 2.60. Salaries higher in London too.
Central London property is way more expensive than property here, has been for many years.

I believe the pizza here is far superior to the UK.

Anyway, I don't get paid too much, I get paid market rate. And I know because it's linked to certain indexes....

Re: Do you ever think that you get paid too much?

I believe you've mixed two questions into one.

Can one be paid too much?

Maybe, but unlikely. We all like and need money; we can simply work less or quit once we think we have enough. Let's say I'd like 100,000 CHF a year and some company decides to pay me 200,000. Would I tell them to pay less? of course not. Would anyone? So instead I'd take the double salary and either try and wrangle large amounts of time off, or save more and quit quicker than I would have done otherwise.

Does one ever have enough money?

Sure. But as for quitting and retiring - it's hard to predict what the future will hold. The financial system could collapse and wipe out your savings, or you could end up needing much more than you thought. So saving for retirement is simply a gamble based on a wish for things to stay relatively stable.

Do I have enough money now, in my early 40s, to retire? Dunno. I could live pretty cheaply and I own a property with a paid-off mortgage, so theoretically yes. Would I want to do that? No, cos I'm not stressed in my job, it takes me to new and wonderful places (I didn't really know where Basel really was until I accepted the job here) and I get to do and learn stuff. Plus I don't want to spend the rest of my life living pretty cheaply.

However, I have taken "mini retirements" a few times. I used to quit my job (more accurately, refuse to extend a contract) and take 6-9 months off just bumming around, travelling, sitting in libraries/cafes/bookshops etc or in one case live in China for half a year. Then when that got boring I'd go back to work.

I've been in Basel 4 years - my longest stretch in any one job without quitting and having one of those mini-retirement thingies. But life here is like a holiday. So why quit a holiday just to have another holiday except with no pay?

Do I think I'm paid too much? Hell no. *AM* I paid too much? Maybe. Do I have enough money? Depends what for. To quit ever earning again until I die? No.

Re: Do you ever think that you get paid too much?

I see it more as being paid enough to live (except you IT peeps - you totally get paid too much )

Here in Toronto I pay $17 for a pizza that is comparable to one I would get in CH for Fr. 20. I pay $1650 for rent, which is about the same as I would pay in Zurich for the same (I'd pay less if I was outside of Zurich).

I also get paid at least 30% less than what I would be getting paid in Switzerland and paying higher taxes.

As I got paid chf3 to the £1 when I moved her I just divided everything by three to convert to UK prices. I never bothered with the official exchange rate as I figured I was being paid the same relative cost of living.
