Italy to Switzerland Tax Free - Refund

I was in italy last week and we drove through como Caisso boarders, the thing is we couldn't get the money back of the goods we purchase in Italy, they said i am in titled to refund 11% of the good, but then we end up paying more at swiss border and then stamp it then they told us to go with one of the location to get the money back, we couldn't find any we got lost somehow and my husband got pissed and we left. We had an argument that i just paid I don't know what was it in the swiss boarder and now i will not refund my money back as well. it was crazy day and i am really mad that we didn't find the location and also didn't get the money back which is around 200 Ch plus i paid around 70Ch i don't know for what?

Any help or thoughts for that ... its driving me crazy

Re: Italy to Switzerland Tax Free - Refund

Your shopping is tax free up to only 300 per person. But that must be on different purchases.

If you do not live in Italy you are entitled to reclaim the tax from Italy.

If you live in Switzerland, however, then you must pay the tax in Switzerland instead.

I imagine that 11% is the difference between 19% tax in Italy and 8% tax in Switzerland.

As to where you get your money back, I think you have to bring or send the papers back to the store or something. Someone else will be here shortly to tell you what to do with the papers.

Re: Italy to Switzerland Tax Free - Refund

If you bring in more than CHF/per person, you pay 8% VAT, regardless of whether or not you get a refund of Italian VAT.

Italian VAT is 22%, not 19%.

The 11% is probably what Global Refund gives you.

Re: Italy to Switzerland Tax Free - Refund

Once we drove across German - Switzerland border. Both custom offices were opposite to each other. First we got bills stamped at German custom office and then paid tax at Switzerland custom office. Finally gave stamped bills to Global blue in Zurich and refund came back in credit card.

I was thinking 19% sounded low. Global refund is a rip off!

Anyway, if it's with Global Refund don't they just have to put the form in post?

Re: Italy to Switzerland Tax Free - Refund

Hi, could anyone advise, should i insert my swiss residence permit number or my passport number, when i will fill in tax free declaration?

I will return from Prague via Frankfurt to Zurich - should i apply for refund in Czech Rep or Germany?

Thank you
