Vacation deposit not received; next steps?

OK, this might be a little pre-emptive and he's just not looking hard enough.
We booked a vaction in Saas Fee for next February and had to pay a deposit, which my wife did at the end of last month in the local post-office directly from our account. We just received an email from the owner saying he hadn't received the deposit and did we still want to keep the reservation. We still have the stamped payment stubs and I confirmed through ebanking that the money had indeed left our account. My wife went back to the Post today to confirm the details were all correct and that the money hadn't been refused due to incorrect bank details etc. The woman behind the counter even said it happens quite often and the recipient just isn't looking hard enough, or at the incorrect date.
However, if he continues to maintain he hasn't received the money, what would be our next course of action, a Betreibung?
Like I said, it might all be a big misunderstanding, but I like to be prepared.

Id send a copy of your transfer with the payment details first and ask them to check again.

You should be able to get a transaction number, that they can check in their account.

Re: Vacation deposit not received; next steps?

Similar advice to everyone else. A copy of the date/time and name should easily solve it. It may also be that your bank name is different to what the person was expecting...but the transaction should have gone in 1-2 days if it was a postfinance-postfinance transaction.

Was the recipient's bank also postfinance?

Sounds to me also as if he did not look hard enough - if it had not been accepted, you ought to have received it back in your account.

Suggest you scan the payment stubs and other proof and send it to him so that he can check again and also hold your reservation.

You could also call your bank and verify as well that it has indeed been transferred to the correct account.

No, UBS

My wife sent him a photo of the stamped stub already. He still maintains he hasn't received it.

Re: Vacation deposit not received; next steps?

In principle you can ask your bank to confirm that they have sent the funds to that bank account. Id assume though that that will cost quite a bit.

Maybe a phone call to your bank and see if they have any idea how you can get a confirmation of the transfer?

Re: Vacation deposit not received; next steps?

This isn't one of those cases of fake chalet web sites where people clone an existing one except for the payment details which are fraudulent.

You pay the fraudster so the money does leave your account. The actual chalet owner believes you haven't paid when you contact him.

Have you confirmed his account details with him directly?

I don't think so; the email address with the payment details is the same he's just contacted us on. It doesn't feel like a scam, tbh.

+1 with this advice.
I'd ring the bank to get a written confirmation and send it to the person. If he still insists, then proceed to the Betreibung.

I really hope you haven't been the victim of a phishing scam, there was a watchdog program on this topic some months back. In those cases the account of the cottage owners had been hacked, and the hackers were then talking directly with the prospective renters.

Me too. Everything seems legit; the property was on Booking.com and has good reviews on TripAdvisor, but if the site has indeed been hacked then that's all meaningless. If he starts asking for more money, then I'm going to get very suspicious.

Like I said, the Post confirms the payment was made into the correct account, but my wife didn't get a written confirmation of this. She's emailed him back and we're just waiting for a response.

Re: Vacation deposit not received; next steps?

Make printouts from the booking.com ad/payment instruction if you haven't already.

I don't see you address this explicitly:
Does the landlord know which account you paid into? Not from the foto, but from what you wrote to him, and did he confirm it's the correct account?

Re: Vacation deposit not received; next steps?

Obviously you know the UBS branch where the money was sent to.

Contact that branch and send them the proof you have confirming the transfer.

He's going to do that himself. Seems the money was paid into a general "Saas Fee vacation" account at the UBS and wasn't tagged for his hotel. I'm certain it isn't a scam, just a bit of a misunderstanding.

Re: Vacation deposit not received; next steps?

Update.
Basically, the woman behind the post-ofice counter made a big cock up; she filled in the pink payment form, but omitted the guy's name and address. So the money went to the UBS Saas Fee, but they had no idea who it was for. After visiting Postfinance, UBS and back again the PO, we finally arranged to get the money returned. Once it was in our account I organised the transfer myself through PF e-banking. The guy confirmed he received it the following day.
