Withdrawing money with a Swiss driving license.

Dear all,

I would appreciate you comments if you ever tried withdrawing money at the bank desk just by showing your Swiss driving license. I have forgotten my wallet at home and I am in need of withdrawing some money to pay lunch, say 100chf, at the nearest bank. I just have with me my Swiss driving license, which I keep inside the car, and I was wondering if it would be enough to identify myself or I have to drive back home to get my wallet.

Cheers and merry Xmas to all,
Daniel.

Re: Withdrawing money with a Swiss driving license.

The last time it happened to me, I borrowed some chuffs from a colleague as my bank was nowhere in the vicinity
Good luck, hope you can sort it out.

Do you have online banking with your account?

I tried that - but apparently printing off a couple of 200chf notes in the office doesn't count as legal tender

They shouldn't as a driving license is not an ID.
With a passport or an ID card, it might work.

Transfer money to a work colleagues account and get him to give you the money.

I've done the same a couple of times, and successfully withdrawn money with no problem. I think I had my passport with me, rather than a driving licence though.

But, importantly, this was at my home branch, i.e. the one where my account is kept. They simply printed off a withdrawal slip and asked me to sign it, no prob.

So, if you go to you home branch it should be no prob, and you may be able to do it at another branch of your own bank just as easily, but certainly not at a branch of a different bank.

I've used my driving licence as an ID loads of times, e.g. at Post Office to pick up parcels or registered mail.

Re: Withdrawing money with a Swiss driving license.

I wouldn't be happy if all I needed to withdraw money from my account at the bank was acceptable. I've just looked at my driving licence (first time in years) the photo is of a healthy young man with lots of hair and a saucy grin. It dates from 1979 - but had I not had to have a new licence because of having lost the original the photo would still be from 1967.

Not a good idea methinks...

Give it a try. You'll probably be asked a few additional questions (e.g. account balance) if the clerk thinks you're not easily recognizable.

I have used my drivers licence to withdraw money from ZKB, CS and used it at post office to collect parcels without any problems.

The withdrawals were over 1000 cfhs. I don't think it will be an issue.

They didn't allow me to withdraw money. It was not the place I had opened my account, but they said that a driving license was not a valid identifier.
