Which bank? - Basel Stadt

Hello,

I have searched some threads but they all seem for people staying for many years in Switzerland.
I moved here in October from Ireland to work in Novartis Stein AG, I will be here til Christmas 2015 at least and was currently getting paid by my company in Switzerland (Im a contractor for Novartis) to my irish bank account. They would convert the CHF I get paid to Euros before moving into my bank.

With the news yesterday of the CHF, I am going to quickly set up an account as it will save me and my company money, but which one should I use? UBS sems the most popular but seem to charge a 200CHF closing account fee which is a bit much if im only here a year.

I hold a B permit currently.

I'm looking to lock in all my savings to the Irish account and just live off the CHF wages as they come in starting from 30th of this month.

I dont need a credit card, a debit card will do fine and wont need to do money transfers but do travel within Europe quite a bit.
Thanks.

Re: Which bank? - Basel Stadt

I'm confused. As the CHF has just risen against the EUR surely you would have wanted to do the opposite; ie kept the money in CHF until yesterday and from now on have it converted and sent back to Ireland?

Anyway, PostFinance.

Post account? www.poste.ch

I bank with CS, UBS and BLKB. I've found UBS to have the best customer service - but with a 200CHF exit fee, I can understand you not going in that direction. You could always try talking to them into waiving the fee.

I would also recommend Post Finance, but he says he wants to travel a lot, and I think the Cirrus card is better than the Post Finance card.

One can withdraw cash worldwide using the PF card with no charges (I believe they load the exchange rate with a 1% commission - still cheap compared to any other card I have*) so long as you have the "Plus" account with them, which is free once you have over 25,000 CHF with them.

* Metrobank (UK) used to be free for worldwide ATM withdrawals but now is only free in Europe.

Yes this is true but I should be getting a raise soon and I dont want the fact that my company will have to fork out 20% more money to keep my Euro salary the same to jeopardise that, plus amything I buy in Switzerland which is expensive enough as is will end up costing me even more if Im getting paid in euros.
Im trying to move away from euros altogether and leave all my savings in the bank in Ireland.

It seems PostFinance are the most recommended from here and another expat group so I think I will use them but get the Plus account.

The only query I have is that my Visa Debit is accepted anywhere and everywhere, Im not so sure the PF card is, I buy a lot of stuff online abroad as well as the travelling.

Can anyone confirm that say, Amazon and Aliexpress take PF card?
