Yeah, but he's a resident. I also bank with UBS and pay because of the mortgage.

Maybe, but the point I was making is that's it's only likely to be free if you're resident here. And how many years has he had the account for? Old timers may be okay, but not necessarily new clients.

Anyway make sure you bring all the necessary documents with you:

"Because Swiss anti-money-laundering law requires you prove where your money is coming from, many certified documents are required in order to open an account. These include authenticated copies of your passport; documents explaining what you do for a living such as tax returns, company documents, professional licenses, etc.; proof of where the money you are depositing is coming from such as a contract from the sale of a business or house; and all of the typical personal information about yourself such as your birth date, a utility bill to prove your residence, all contact information, and, of course, your name. They'll also want to know what you want to do with the money once you have the account."

Re: Bank account for future student

I bank with UBS and I have to pay 15chf per month for my account package and i'm a resident.

UBS wouldn't let me open an account until I had a residents permit, even though my fiancÚ was Swiss.

If you are rich enough to get a Swiss account as a non-resident, then I feel you should be asking for info from your financial advisor, not the EF community.

But it's free if you have more than a certain amount in your accounts (as is PostFinance), and 3p count.

Do you have empty accounts?

Re: Bank account for future student

No, my account is quite healthy. But having a mortgage seems to mean I pay CHF15 a month like Island Monkey does for my account. Before we got the mortgage with UBS our banking was free if the account held more than CHF10,000.

Strange.

Good thing that my mortgage is at another bank (Banca Stato).
