Shipping a valuable gift--customs hang ups abound?

My friend in the US is shipping me her wedding dress from 6 years ago because I will likely be using it for my own wedding! However, my fiance pointed out that there could be a snafu with customs.

The dress originally cost $2000, but it is a gift from her to me, and I have no idea what its declared value would be now (or if it could even be properly appraised). Would it still incur a tax even if it's a personal gift and now many years old? What is the best way to declare what it is to show it's a gift? I read "persönliche Gebrauchsgegenstände" somewhere and I don't know if that makes sense here. I'd also like to insure it, and perhaps that would send red flags to the customs agents. But I could have her add a copy of the receipt to show it was bought years ago and is now a gift.

I've read through other threads and http://www.ezv.admin.ch/ but really could not find a good answer on this.

Thanks a lot!

You should sent them an email and ask them what is the best way to proceed. I have found they are really quite good at getting back to you.

Otherwise is it urgent? Can you not have someone bring it in person?

Re: Shipping a valuable gift--customs hang ups abound?

Seeing it's 6 years old, declare it as personnel items and ship it with DHL or similar.

Customs value USD 50.--, i doubt very much if customs will be too interested in it, even if they open the packet as soon as they see what it is.

Lets be honest a second hand wedding dress is probably not worth any more in monetary value, in sentimental value this is different but then no amount of money will replace it anyway so it's a mute point.

If you're really that paranoic about it getting lost, then the only solution is to go fetch it yourself or pay somebody to bring it over in hand luggage.
