Putting cash into a foreign bank account.

I am an Au pair and payed in cash, but get a lot more than I am spending. I have no Swiss bank account but a British one (Barclays). How can I put my money into my English account? Can I go along to any bank and just deposit cash like that? And will they charge me?

Sure they will, plus you'll get hit on the exchange rate as i presume you're paid in CHF and Barclays account is in GBP.

Open an account here or store it under the bed until you go.

Just think if you send it back to the UK at quite an expense, then decide you want to buy something here and have to re-transfer, that'll cost somewhere between 10-15% probably.

Re: Putting cash into a foreign bank account.

Open a bank account at postfinance and deposit the money there. Ensure your "employer", for some reason paying you cash, is making the correct deductions to cover your employment benefits.

When you leave, use post finance to transfer all the money to the UK - it's not the cheapest way of doing things but unless you're sending back more than 10,000 wouldn't bother with exchange brokers and the like.

It's perfectly legal to be paid in cash.

I didn't say it wasn't. I implied it was unusual as there is no trail, so it could be worth checking to ensure the correct deductions are being made. I'm a cynic.
