Best way to get my phone back into Switzerland...

I just returned from visiting my family in France, and realised that I left my mobile phone there (twins and sleepless nights will do that to you!)

Does anyone have advice on the best way to get it back here quickly? I'd like to avoid paying import tax if at all possible...

I've seen this thread: Import tax on my own item?, but it still doesn't answer my question.

Thanks!!

Private courier overnight service.
It may work out best if your family at the pick up end in France, tried to source a local (to them) company.

Thanks... Do you know if there is any way not to pay tax if I bought the phone here?

Might be a long shot, but if you have the receipt can you scan and email it to your family to enclose (along with a letter explaining) with the phone? Your receipt should have a serial number or something on it, which can be matched to the phone.

That's a good idea! Thankfully, we scanned the receipt when I bought the phone, so I can easily send it to my family.

I'm not sure it's a given, that it'll be subject to tax, anyway.
In your linked e.g. above, that was regarding a brand new replacement phone, bought outside of CH and sent here; therefore, not surprising that it attracted Swiss tax.

If you go the courier route, for over border shipping, they should complete a pro forma customs invoice, which should include all relevant information.

Another option is to send it by normal registered post - wrapped in bubble wrap, in a Jiffy bag.

Why not call the duty office and inquire there. They should be of help. Otherwise buy a new cheap phone and just have your sim card sent back.

Why not meet one of your Family at or near the border and do a checkpoint Charly.

Not a bad idea if you and your family both live in border areas. However OP is in Fribourg - not exactly close to a French border to just hop over in a few minutes.

And my family is 700 km away, so not exactly close to a Swiss border!

I assumed the duty office would be closed on the weekend, and I'd like to settle this sooner, rather than later.

I have an old cheap phone I can use, but would much prefer to get my new one back - which is why I started this thread

If the risk of being taxed is so worrying (no idea how much that might be, but I can see that any amount would annoy when the phone's already your property); would it be possible to have the phone sent to someone who lives in France but near the swiss border, who could then pop across to a swiss post office and sent it on to you?
That way there's no customs office check involved.

I'd offer to do it myself, but I don't get into town very often so it might be a couple of weeks before you got your phone back.
You can PM me though if that suggestion helps.

That's a really good idea! I'm going to contact former colleagues in Geneva and see if one of them will do that for me
