Where to best change CHF to Euro? Airport or local bank?

From your experience, where do you get the best exchange rates from? Or does it not make a big difference? Is it better to exchange currency here or in the country of your destination (in this case Greece but not sure if that makes a difference)?

Thanks for any advice!

How much?

It makes a huge difference - for small amounts any fixed fee is significant, for larger amounts the rate is more important.

Never at the airport. Because they pay so much to the airports in rent, etc, their costs are higher. Also they have a captive audience.

Usually the spread (difference between buying/selling rate) is more important than the commission. Shop arround on the internet and dont forget the Post Office. (And the Migros/Coop banks if you've got branches nearby)

Typically the best way is to use plastic (debit card, credit card) to withdraw money at the destination from an ATM.

Obviously, this depends quite a bit on your plastic - have a look at the terms and conditions associated with yours.

Yes, money from ATM has the best rate, and you dont have to carry a wad of cash with you. I just came back from Greece and there were ATMs everywhere!!!

I'd agree, but don't forget the minimum charge on foreign currency withdrawals (check your bank fees).

The rate is normally good/comparable to other small conversion options, but you don't want to be taking out 8x 50 EUR and paying 8x minimum fee, vs say 2x 200 EUR and 2x minimum fee.

Also, if it asks if you want them to convert it to CHF for the payment, effectively that means you pay the FX fees of that bank rather than yours - standing at an ATM chances are you won't know if that's good or bad, so personally I'd stick with paying in EUR and paying the fees to my bank that I've checked (and move bank if it sucks).

Final point - of course all this is talking about DEBIT cards - never ever take out cash on a CREDIT card in any currency unless you like paying fees and interest.

The best rate is with Migros Change for over 1000 chf, they can debit from migros bank card, postfinance (or cash) and give you euro. If anyone know anything cheaper do post here!
