Sending used clothes with DHL (Germany to Zurich)

Hi everyone,

In September I'm taking on a job in Zurich. I arranged to transfer most of my stuff with a removal company (an englishforum member!) but they will arrive in Zurich September 4.

So, I decided to send ahead a bag (20-25 kg) with some things for the first week (towels, clothes, underwear, etc.).

DHL has a nice price at 53 euros Germany->Switzerland for 30kg. What do I declare on the box? Can this be treated as my "moving" belongings? Could I be asked to pay tax and administration rights on my used clothes? What if I attach my new contract and renting agreement on the box?

Any advices are welcome.

P.S.: I don't want to take the bag with me as excess luggage because our itinerary is Belgium->Greece->Cyprus->Zurich. Too much fuss and too expensive.

Re: Sending used clothes with DHL (Germany to Zurich)

I had some of my clothes shipped to me by DHL, after I left them with a friend while on a trip. She put a couple of hundred dollars as value of the parcel, and I was billed for customs. Its only worth declaring a high value if you are somehow insuring it. Otherwise, put in a small value, about 50CHF.

So even if it's personal items, I need to declare a value and get taxed for it? For example if I declare 50CHF value (they are used clothes) + 53 euros shipping, I should expect to pay 8% vat on these plus the admin fee of DHL (+- 19CHF?), right?
