Transferring retirement funds from a US 401k account to a swiss 3a account

Hello,

has anyone ever transferred money from a US-based 401k-type account (in my case actually a 403b account) to a swiss 3a or 2nd pillar account?

What would be the smartes way of doing this in terms of keeping the tax-deferred status of the money?

Seems to me that others who have worked in the US and now live in Switzerland would have faced a similar situation. Alas, some pretty intensive web searching did not yield any useful information.

All the best,

Ulrich

Be very careful.

When afriend left the US he had a compy matched 401k, leaving the US division had its laws etc.. where he was no longer a US employee, therefore he had two options:

1. Leave 401k as is, grows, but you can not contribute nor can teh employer

2. Move trax / risk / fee free to a Traditional IRA
This has its advantages as you input after tax funds, you can therefore claim approx 5500 per year in your taxes.

He did the 2nd choice.

3. You could withdraw all funds, there will be some penalty, then place it in your Swiss retirement.

I have both but don't think it can be done w/o incurring cost/taxes so I wudnt imagine doing it.

I agree with runningdeer. There is no country (but UK in some very special situations) which can transfer their 2nd pillar to Switzerland. So far there are no social insurance agreements between the U.S and Switzerland on this topic.
