Opening a UK online account

I'm looking to open a UK online account.

Any recommendations/suggestions?

I have various family members in the UK, whose address I could use to enable me to fill out the online form.

Ideally (like all of us), I would like to earn some interest and pay no/low fees.

At the moment Santander 123 looks good, even with their £2/month fee (to be increased to £5/month next year) ... interest rate is 3% up to a maximum on £20K.

Any other ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

You'll need solid proof of address in the UK before you can open one……..you can't just give ID and any old address you feel like.

This. They will run a credit check on you when you're opening it and this will check your address history.

Is that the reality or the theory?

The reason I ask is that I know of two colleagues who recently opened new accounts, with banks that they did not have any previous connections/accounts with and they used their parents address, where they had/have not lived at for more than 10yrs.

Application went through with no query/question raised.

They will run a credit check yes. I opened an account in the UK two weeks ago and there was a hard credit search on my credit report the next day.

If their parent's address is the last address they lived at then that will still be the address they are registered at. I presume they are on the electoral roll there as well.

I'd recommend this account for your minor fraud though

What is the requirement to be on the electoral roll?

Re: Opening a UK online account

For opening a pure deposit account (with debit card), the main thing is about proving you have some connection to (eg. live at) at the address. Unless you have a UK driving licence registered there, are on the electoral roll, get bills there, it's nigh on impossible. The only way I got it done was to get a letter from the tax office.

If you play it totally by the book, you won't even be able to open an account, as they are generally for UK residents only, so not if you live and pay tax abroad, even if you are British.

That's only if they can't do it through a credit check, which most of the time they can if you have lived in the UK and have a credit history.

Re: Opening a UK online account

I've had an account with NatWest for well over 30 years, for which they still have my parents address. A few years ago I wanted to convert it to a joint account with Mrs Monkey and they wanted proof that we both lived there, i.e. two utility bill with both our names on at that address. And that was just to have a second person added to a long-standing account. That was on top of the standard identity checks, passport etc. I can imagine that opening a new account would be a lot more work.

Well I have just registered 1 of my UK credit cards in the UK, so I will try to build up a UK credit foot print.

When you say that you live at an address where you don't actually live it's classed as falsifying info. Full stop.

You clearly have not looked at the form, you can tick a box that says you live at another address. So no falsifying at all.

Re: Opening a UK online account

Consors Bank in Nürnburg is owned by the big French bank BNP Paribas, and has a completely free Internet Giro account with free VISA and free Maestro cards. But you need to have a regular income or pension!

There are only minimal charges if you get overdrawn. Free cash withdrawals at all ATMs world wide. Free SEPA transfers within Europe, a charge is made for outside Europe. Other standard bak services are available, see their web page. Disadvantage: it's all written in the German language.
https://www.consorsbank.de/ev/Girokonto/-/Girokonto

Last month I gave them online my name and my mother's address in the UK. They sent me forms to that address, and then I had to take my British passport to the German post office for verification. No other hurdles to jump.
